The issue is different on a state by state basis. Each state has their own permitting and licensing process. Florida and Hawaii(can collect fish) seem to be the most restricted....but, most states allow collection except in preserve areas. Some states have different rules for personal use as...

Maybe you could post a pic. The anemones in pic 2 and 4 are corynactus.... aka strawberry anemones. They came from Puget Sound where temps range fron 38 F to 60 F. They tend to melt down at around 65F.

My tanks and sump are made from 1" thick acrylic....there's no sweating even on 100+ degree days. There are no cold water collector sites in the US. There are a couple in Australia....but, you'll need to buy several boxes of stuff to make it worth shipping. As for price....some are...

Water parameters are the same as a fish only warm water tank.... where you are mostly concerned with pH, alk, temp, NO3, salinity.....Ca, Mg isn't that important as long as they are above ....say....350 and 1100. You'll find the only challenge is keeping the pH up above 8.1. Kalk for top off has...

God no....that is the support equipment for my warm water 850 gal reef. The cold tanks are just sitting in some spare space that I had in the equipment closet. The cold tanks have just been an experiment to test the viability of keeping a cold reef. Aesthetics play a very minor role....someday...

Evaporation is very small compared with warm tanks. My total volume....say...150 gals evaporates about 1/2 gal per day. I actually top it off with kalk from my warm system. The kalk helps keep the pH up which , in a cold tank, tends to be on the low side since minimal photosynthesis is occurring.

In general....cold tanks are similar in costs to a fish only warm water set up.....but cheaper than an sps system. Some particulars to cold water setups are... 1) They need only enough light for the viewer since most critters are non-photosynthetic.....unless you want to grow kelp or...

I try not to keep nudibranchs since feeding them can be a problem. I do have this one guy though....must be just feeding off the life on the rocks. My tank is really set up to mimic Puget Sound....with a few Australian fish. A western blue devil from Australia A grunt sculpin from Puget...

Dang.... it really depends upon what you're trying to keep. Most of the critters in my tank come from Puget Sound where the best temp for critters is 50 F.... but, I also have a few Australian fish that would like to see temps around 60 F.....so, I split the difference....and keep the tank at...

I've now had correspondence with several collectors throughout Southern Australia.....Simon is one of them....although, I haven't heard from him in many months. Do you know him ?

    Achilles tang question

I also think that they are one of the more difficult tangs....but, I'm sure why. I do think that clown tangs are more difficult though. I don't see very many achilles offered these days. I'm fortunate to have a LFS near me that uses a Hawaiian transhipper.....which (from the flights to Portland...

    Cold water anemones

Completely WRONG. Every state has their own rules and regulations. For example, In Oregon, collection is legal in non reserve locations....but, a fee must be paid to transport them within the state. In Washington, you need the proper licenses (easily gotten online for about $100)....but no...

    Cold water anemones

Collection is a gray area in the state of Washington for the critters that we are interested in....but, from my conversations with DFW.....you need a shellfish, fishing, and seaweed license. Collection must be in non- reserve areas and must be for personal use (ie you can't sell them). The state...

    Cold water anemones

You're not going to find much in the tidepools. The good stuff is around 20 - 100 ft. I'd avoid the anemones in the tidepools since they ( the green ones ) are photosythetic and will require strong lighting. The tidepools will be good for a few snails, hermits, maybe an urchin, some starfish...

    Portland/Eugene Stores

The best stores....regardless of location (all you need is an airport)....are the ones that have over the years cultured relationships with transshippers. If a store sources stock from only LA wholesalers, they will never see a steady supply of high quality livestock....only livestock that has...

    Realistic Reef Tanks?

I wouldn't say 5 or 6......maybe 10 -15.....and it varied a bit at each location......especially whether I was in the lagoon or outside the lagoon. As a result of that trip, I decided to drastically reduce the number and density of my corals and rocks in my tank to create more open space. I have...

    Realistic Reef Tanks?

When I dove Tahiti, I was surprised at how many different species there were so close to one another.....not a huge variety.....but not singly dominated either. Here are some poor pics that were taken at a 100 ft.....I didn't have a flash, but the color variety wasn't bad considering the depth.
