    High wattage heater suggestions?

What brand heaters? Do they have their own thermostats? I have an Aquadyne controller with X-10 control modules but I have never used it for more than pH, ORP, and temp monitoring.

    High wattage heater suggestions?

Yep the other heaters would still be around for backup as I mentioned.

    High wattage heater suggestions?

I have about 240gal system total volume with 60gal in sump in cool basement. Currently running three heaters in sump (200, 200, and 250w) and they are not keeping up. The heater thermostat settings also don't seem to register very well and they have to be cranked up to temp settings much higher...

    Tang harassing new addition

Tank is 63in long by 30in wide by 24in deep (Elos 160xl). Yes I was considering adding another large fish or two at some point when the right fish makes it impossible to resist! Maybe I need to move up the timetable. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Lots and lots of live rock, zoos...

Lee, thank you very much for this link! I have a lot of work to do!

    Tang harassing new addition

Yep doing the mysis and nori already. Hoping when the lights come on today things will be more peaceful. I have been thinking about how to segregate as Vinny suggested but my aquascaping doesn't lend itself to that unless I get very creative in cutting up some grate material. But if today...

    Beginning day 3 without power

I have the eu3000 and it has been a lifesaver notbto hoe wonderfully quiet it runs. Has an 'Eco-throttle' that reduces idle when the load is low making it even quieter!

Way too much humidity. Need advice.

Good discussion... I think I need to put a dehumid unit and a bathroom vent/fan down in my fishroom in the basement. Our suitcases and seasonal clothes close by are starting to get that moldy smell.

    Tang harassing new addition

My 4" Chevron Tang is harassing a much smaller Copperband Butterfly that I introduced today. I also added a Mandarin Goby and a small yellow Watchman Goby but the Tang is paying no attention to them. Basically he is forcing th CB to stay in an upper corner. If the CB ventures down on to reef he...

How do you guys auto feed your tank?

Hey Cwazy, I remember buying a small sunset from you at the Sammamish Safeway! Yep the Eheim auto feeder works great for small pellets. As Don said, close the door almost all the way shut and then put a piece of tape across most of it. Then experiment by manually dumping food into your hand...

Seachem Prime and tap water instead of ro/di?

City water, well water, etc will all fluctuate with respect to TDS over time so I would never be comfortable with a report which is basically a snapshot. The RO will ensure that you aren't building up undesired solids without knowing. A simple low cost RO is worth the investment IMO.

please advise - pH may be too high

Agreed. You are not that far off nominal. Keep a watch. The lights can swing it a couple tenths easy. If it continues to escalate with the lights off then you might want to get the Kalk disconnected.

please advise - pH may be too high

pH of 8.4 in itself is not really a concern. My tank runs 8.2 to 8.4. I believe 8.4 is on the high side of typical recommended range for marine fish.

    Beginning day 3 without power

Good points Nick. I am sure that my in wall propane ventless heater was the culprit for the pH drop. Now that it is turned off the pH is rising.

Good news!!! Power restored! I can't wait to take a hot shower.

    Beginning day 3 without power

One of actions I also had to take was to fire up an in-wall propane heater in my office adjacent to the fish room as the cold basement as it was driving my temp down. I noticed after over night my pH dropped from 8.3 range to 7.8. I don't know what caused that except for maybe real high CO2...

    Beginning day 3 without power

Now to the blessing... My tank is located in the living room a little more prominently than my better half's liking (Bricky might be able to relate) but the good news is we have a LP gas fireplace that has a fan which heats the room. My generator being hooked into the main with a mechanical...

    Beginning day 3 without power

Thanks Jeff... I am sure there are those suffering worse than me. I hope this thread provides some help... At least maybe for next time or for tank planning. As you know, there is a lot to think about when 'investing' in a large reef tank. I use the word loosely here!

    Beginning day 3 without power

We are not roughing like some I am sure, but the 20deg outside temperature is rapidly sucking the thermal mass from our house. With my sump in the cooler basement I was already finding it difficult to keep the tank temperature above 74deg and have been contemplating how to improve my heating...
