    vacuum container

Hmmm this thing is used to marinade meats so I assumed it would work. I went to the website of the maker and this is what i found: Simply add your marinade to the food in the dish and then pump out the air to create a vacuum. The vacuum opens up the pores and fibers of the meat, allowing for a...

    vacuum container

Not sure if this qualifies for an advanced topic but here it is. My wife has a pampered chef vacuum container that is suppose to be used for marinating meats in. Well I decided to take this a step further. I placed a small container inside of the small container and put mysid shrimp and...

Hang On vs In Sump Skimmer

I based mine off of DonW skimmers. Mine is slightly different as his follows the twist lock flange type technique, mine is also twist lock but I use compression and an O-ring. Here are the links to Don's... for the skimmer http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12863 and more...

Hang On vs In Sump Skimmer

thanks, it works better than any other one I've ever owned. And I think it was the cheapest to build.

Hang On vs In Sump Skimmer

Here is a pic of my DIY skimmer. It's a recirc so I'm sure that helps as well. I thought about adding a ball valve to help control the amount of water going into the skimmer but realized that the gate valve on the output accomplishes this quite nicely.

Hang On vs In Sump Skimmer

I agree with Krish. The waste is all going to the sump might as well skim there. I have taken mine one step further and have my skimmer plumbed in directly to the overflow piping. My in sump skimmer. (Thanks DonW for showing me I can make a skimmer that doesn't have to have a million nylon...

Possible to keep a tang in a 55 gallon?

I think I'm going to have to agree with Don. Who's to say if a 55 gallon or a 125 gallon make a world of difference to a fish that in the wild has a range of God knows how big. I'm sure it is stressed either way in the beginning no matter the size of the box it's forced to spend the rest of...

    I'm going INSANE!!

Maybe I'm just stating the obvious but you have a 600 gph overflow and a return pump that does 900 gph. I would either get a smaller return pump or a larger overflow. On that note though if you turn your Mag down with a ball valve you shouldn't start sucking air because the return should...

Recommend macroalgaes for the main tank

I agree on the grape caulerpa, that's why I said caulerpa racemosa. Just out of curiosity though. Why do you not like any of the others?

    ID Please

It is a green polyped sarcophyton. I've got one in my tank as well. Mine is now about 6 inches across when open. Perhaps later today after the lights come on I can take a picture for comparison.

Recommend macroalgaes for the main tank

Oh you people and your hate of caulerpa. While I do not recommend using caulerpa racemosa, I use caulerpa prolifera in my Seahorse tank and feel as though it looks very natural. It's a nice alternative to using turtle grass which is much more expensive and requires a deep sandbed.

    Stressed tang?....video

I agree with Ron. I think the tank is too small for a tang of that size. Not sure if the tang is stressed or just simply bored. (Can fish get bored). Long ago before I knew better I had a yellow tang that would lift a piece of caulerpa with its snout then let it fall again. Over and over...

    Wave maker plans

I'm not sure your original idea would work. If you are going to have your styrofoam on a a pivot point I believe the styrofoam would open slowly as the weight of the water increased and release the water in trickle form instead of one big surge.

    Acrylic paper glue

Best thing I've found to get stuff off of acrylic is another piece of acrylic. Just use an edge and whatever it is will usually come off without scratching.

    Riddle: what has 5 sweepers

Are you sure it's not a starfish. Don't most of them have 5 arms? I believe that cuttlefish have 8 arms. Can't wait to see pictures.

Sea Apple expelling something... what is it??

I had a sea apple once, and only once as it did a little expelling and killed everything in my tank. I would move it to a QT tank if possible just to be sure.

what is the key to rapid grass growth

I could be wrong but it sounds to me like you are referring to caulerpa prolifera. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/62/Caulerpa_prolifera.JPG/250px-Caulerpa_prolifera.JPG If this is what you are using you don't need any sand for it whatsoever. It can grow in a...
