    New Skimmer

Too many of my early years spent in the pump and compressor field. PS How is your skimmer doing? Any pictures in operation? You can't install too big a skimmer. :D I can't get over how quickly my new skimmer reacts to increased protein load. I feed the fish and in 20...

Mike, It's a little more than simply selecting a compressor based on ACFM (actual cubic feet per minute) which is measured at compressor inlet. Depending upon the compressors ability to develop pressure this will vary greatly. If you select simply based on CFM and use a fine bubble air stone...

Any ideas for a dcent DIY Skimmer

Here is a more specific approach and idea. If I needed a large skimmer I would look for commercially available tanks that could be modified. As an example; the attached tank turned upside down and a couple of ft. 6" extension pipe added to the cone. Poly tank turned up side down Price and...

A 4500 Gal reef tank......are your opening your own Bali Sea World? I think you need to start looking at buying a commerical skimmer or building your own. This may give you some ideas.....Commerical Skimmer The cheap way to build and operate a large skimmer may be to follow Majorreef's...

    New Skimmer

Mike, Jump in on this and correct me if I am wrong. I added an air stone yesterday as a boost to my existing system....the air was in addition to what it all ready had from the exisitng ejector and pinwheel pump. The extra air didn't make any significant improvement. In fact I had to lower...

    New Skimmer

The diaphragm Linear II are about 30% cheaper than the piston. Look at all the money you will save on hose not having to put it in the garage....

    New Skimmer

It may be worth while looking at the Sweetwater Linear II (diaphragm) or Sweetwater Linear Piston .......rated very very quiet, less than 40 db. The piston last up to 8 years between rebuilds. http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/product.detail/iid/4706

Any ideas for a dcent DIY Skimmer

One thing that a lot of people may over look when evaluating a skimmer performance is the SG of the salt water. A skimmer will make fine bubbles and foam like crazy when pushing slater water with a SG of 1.035. Let the SG drop to 1.032 and the skimmers ability to make and hold fine bubbles for...

We are talking particle and bubble charge which is the whole basis of what makes a skimmer work. It is the power that attracts and hold onto the tiniest particles of waste in suspension onto the bubble which lifts it so it can be exported. If the bubble and particle are given the time to...

    New Skimmer

Mike, How many feet of hose are you running. At 3 cfm air flow in 1/4" hose you have 5 psig of pressure drop per 100 ft. If you have the air pump 50 ft away in the garage, you may be eating up a lot of energy and will be restriction the air flow to less than 3 cfm. A larger 3/8 or 1/2 "...

I think everyone is missing the point of my discussion. It is simply that particles in a fluid often develop a charge. This charge does effect how they are attracted to each other or the bubble in a skimmer. In the case of a colloid with it's like charge particles keeping the particles in...

Seriously, I know some of you want to simplify a rather complex micro world into little boxes to understand how things work; ie, 19th Century Laws of Physics can't be used to explain partlcle charge in the micro world using Coulomb's, Gauss', Amperes, and Faraday's law which do not apply. As...

How about this idea.....? Even Zephrant the Engineer should go along with it since it incorporates one of his Laws of Physics...specifically Faraday's law. We wind the outside of the skimmer tube with fine wire. Feed the fish food loaded with iron filings. Now as the fish poop is pumped...

There are enough good minds in reef keeping that we should be able to come up with a method of testing and comparing any skimmers performance. The testing would need to be a simple so the potential for errors are reduced. A test that would end up with only a few performance numbers for...

    New Skimmer

I don't know about you but I sure don't need or want any more air the way my Super ER 5-2 is set up and running. In two days it removed at least 2 pints of black goop, I cleaned the cup this moring and it was a solid 1/8" of super gooey goop, and when I got home this evening the cup was full of...

I don't think you read the pdf file I attached. I give up. Curious though? Exactly what laws of Physics are you talking about?

Good....just didn't want you to have to put a 10 hp compressor in the garage

What is the single most important thing you would tell a new reef keeper!

Looking back I cannot but help to laugh at my concern about the cost of the first item you normally buy...the tank. That's the cheapest part of the hobby. And not just any car in your budget, more like a Porsche or Mercedes.

Sorry for the delay...got busy A PDF reprint of the topic of Zeta Potential of charge in liquids. Don't totally discount the affect a little spinning metal wheel with pins it may have on particles in liquid and gas. There is plenty on the topic in any Google search. Didn't you ever run around...
