    Let's Talk About ~Algae Control~

Back to the topic....... Maybe this article has already been mentioned, if not, it is worth reading.http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2005/5/tips If you don't keep phosphates very low you will always have an algae issue. Phosphate reduction and control is an accepted given. Another article on...

    Polyp Extension = Happy Corals?

Recent DNA analysis of bacteria in soil has shown that scientists have been badly underestimating it's diversity. There is no reason not to believe the same biodeversity will not be found on reef's when tested for under advanced DNA methods. 1 million different species of bacteria per gram...

    scatches in the tank

I'm not Jason but I'll respond from my files. The sheets aren't cheap. These are some of the best prices I found for full sheets. http://www.elitefin.com/Micro_Mesh.asp?number=30 Teenage Directions: For WAX ON....WAX OFF VERY FINE SCRATCHES: Begin with either Micro-Mesh 4000 or 6000...

    scatches in the tank

This is an approach I took several years ago to clean up scratches inside the tank. You need the fine micromess paper as mentioned by others. The tape is the metal tape used for AC duct work. A lot of elbow grease is needed. Good luck ;)

    First Time Set Up

Tradam, Tell us more about your set up and what support equipment you have. You need a good skimmer running 24/7 and then stand back an allow you system to go through it's nitrogen cycle for about a month. The water will clear up in a few days and the stink will go away.:p I recommend...

    Let's Talk About ~Algae Control~

I just finished reading all of this........ Did anyone ever address PondGuys issues? A tank over growing with algae, dying fish, and an angry wife. This guy is begging for help and needs it. If you are still around PondGuy.....first, build or buy that bigger and better skimmer. Without that...

    Live Rock Saturation?

can you give me a reference article for this statement about live rock and more varieties of bacteria? I missed that in LD101. Must have been sleeping. When I stated a clean carbon source, I didn't mean filter carbon. I was talking about alcohol carbon to increase bacteria...

    Live Rock Saturation?

Easy....;) live rock from different parts fo the world is basically the same! It may have different shapes and surface area, but it all needs enough bacteria on it surface to consume the nutrients that settle and are absorbed into it to keep from turning into an algae farm. Good......I...

    Live Rock Saturation?

No where have I implied or said, Niki isn't a good reef keeper. I agree you should not need to boil rock....except for the arbitary time of 10 year life. Also agree that all are tanks and setups are different. I don't agree that same procedures that work in one tank, won't work in all reef...

    Live Rock Saturation?

Hard feelings about what? Kidding around and giving our opinions? The DSB has been gone a long time. The tank is bare bottom. That initial piece of live rock I built by attaching a lot of small pieces was changed out when I went BB. This was done to try to address a nutrient control and an...

    Live Rock Saturation?

Nikki, My comments were general comments and my beliefs that it is not necessary to boil rock to eliminate excess algae or control excess nutrients; from a die off or over feeding . I do not believe live rock can get so saturated with nutrients from over feeding or a die off that existing...

    Live Rock Saturation?

Sure you can take a few pieces of live rock that have algae on them and boil them to kill it. I do not see that it will do anything to remove any of what you consider saturated inside the pores. This is the first time I have heard of anyone actually boiling live rock to unsaturate it or kill...

    Live Rock Saturation?

I find it comical......people pay hundred of dollars to have coral rock shipped by air frt from far away reefs around the world, taking great effort to maintain the life on it, and then they boil it to kill everything on it. Wouldn't be easier to simply make your own rock out of cement to...

    Live Rock Saturation?

There are virtually billions of different stains of bacteria, and they are continuely evolving into new strains, many of which are an absolute necessity for larger life forms to exist. You would die in a matter of days without the bacteria in and on your body. The number of pathogenic bacteria...

    To much light

To avoid shocking the coral, another easy approach is to reduce the lighting is by running only one of the MH for a couple of days, then two for a few more days , and then the finally the third after a week.

    ZEO Question

Tank looks great Crazy........it looks like you have a very light fish population? Which may be part of why you can get away without using a skimmer. Do you feed it at all? Most of your SPS look fairly new and the coral population fairly light by the growth. My concern with not using a skimmer...

    Live Rock Saturation?

Interesting thread.......what I don't understand is the concept of live rock being a problem because it may be part of the tanks bioload? Certainly it is part of the bio load. We takes weeks to seed the tanks and stabilize it with bacteria so it can support life more effectively and make it...

    Amphiprionidae (Clownfish) Workshop

Great thread........I didn't know these little buggers where so complex. I have a mated pair and a friend. They initally tried to kill the odd man out and ripped him up pretty good. I thought he was going to die. Then the pair accepted him and he guards the eggs when the pair runs off to...

    New Skimmer

Mike, I assume you are using the fine bubble air stones? I assume the 15% air volume is based on the water /air bubble being 15% higher than the water level with the air turned off? My modified ER only has about 6% air volume based on that analysis. What is the height of your water/air bubble...
