pro won heater... almost all Dead

I don't currently use a heater, as the ambient temp and my MH's with fans keep the temp 79-83 degrees. I am using an AquaControllerJR from neptune systems (www.neptunesys.com). I use it to control lights (which shut off if the tank temp gets too high), CO2 injector, and fans. If I had a heater...

    Injured Fin

It's about 1/4 of an inch from the body. How far out do the bones go before it is just cartilage? Don't know about age. Its body size is about 2 inches vertically and about 3-3 1/2 inches mouth to base of tail. What do you think about the prognosis?

Most Common Mistake you see....Please add one and move on so all can share..

Mixing water and electricity. Ok, so it has to be done, but don't forget that the two don't mix. Handle plugs with dry hands. Always inspect your cords to ensure they are intact. Use grounded plugs and outlets. Use a GFCI outlet.

    Injured Fin

Thanks for the reply. No evidence of fin rot. No discoloration. The edge looks torn, and the other fins are all open and working well. No other signs of stress in this or other fish. All are eating well. This fish comes right over when I put seaweed in to feed. Water parameters are excellent, 0...

    Ca/Alkalinity help

Finally! I am as close to balance as I am willing to push it. Ca 415 dkH 8.3 Mg 1200 ph 8.23 I have kicked my Ca reactor back on, at a much lower flow than previously, and will adjust it to keep settings as steady as possible. Now just to get my Mg up to 1350. Thanks for all your help.

    Injured Fin

I have a powder blue tang in my tank for the past two weeks. By every sign it is healthy, eating well, no funny swimming, etc. However, two days ago I noticed that its left fin was shredded. Doesn't look biten, but nearly completely gone. I think that the fin was in my tunze when it kicked on...

    Ca/Alkalinity help

Thanks guys. I think I finally have this down. My parameters tonight were: Ca 370 dkH 9.3 Mg 1200 pH 8.3 I will keep adding Ca to get as close to balance as I can, and since my Ca supplement contains some Mg, I will keep an eye on what it does before I start supplementing the Mg. Once I am in...

    Ca/Alkalinity help

I should have restated the numbers from Thursday (my very first post): 8/31 @2000 Ca 390 dkH 15 So the 5.6 drop in dkH (from 15; corresponding to the 40ppm drop in Ca) would put me at 9.4 last night, which is pretty close to the 9.6 I measured. That is why I think my Ca measurement from...

    Ca/Alkalinity help

Thank you again, Boomer. My Ca reactor has been off now for the past three days. Do these numbers make any sense? They are taken 48 hours apart. 9/1@2000 Ca 400 dkH 13.1 pH 8.2 9/3@2000 Ca 350 dkH 9.6 pH 8.2 By my calcuations, for that drop in dkH the Ca should have only dropped by...

    the Dell Hell

I would encourage you to do so. I make it a habit of always repartitioning, re-formatting and reinstalling the OS I want on my computer, with the options I want, not what the manufacturer thinks I want. It ensures that the registry is as clean as it can be, there is no adware or spyware lying...

    Ca/Alkalinity help

Boomer, Thanks for the response. I think I now have an understanding of the chemistry involved. Now my questions are about actual practice. According to the calculator you link to above, a balanced Ca and dkH, based upon the starting dkH of my freshly made saltwater, would require me to raise...

    Ca/Alkalinity help

Based upon This article from Reef Keeping, it appears to me that test kits only measure CO3 and HCO3. This article has been great, and links to a number of other articles that have helped my understand this chemistry.

    Ca/Alkalinity help

So how much Ca should I be adding to my change water? Is there an additive that adds Ca and Mg?

    Ca/Alkalinity help

Is this because my kit tests for CO3, HCO3, and H2CO3?

    Ca/Alkalinity help

Ok, I retested. I don't know why I have those numbers written down from previous testing (of my IO mix water), but here's where I stand as of tonight at 1800 PDT: Tank testing (Ca Reactor off for about 22 hours: pH 8.4 Ca 400 (within standard error of test I would think) dkH 13.1 Spec Grav...

    Ca/Alkalinity help

I am glad that these numbers make no sense to you either. I am using Salifert test kits for the Ca, Alk, and Phos. The others are from a general saltwater test kit, and the pH correlates with my pH probe (that is now in my Ca reactor). I don't have a Mg test kit. I will recheck the numbers...

    Ca/Alkalinity help

I am having difficulty trying to figure out why I get the following parameters: Ca 390 dkH 15 pH 8.4 Nitrate/Nitrite/NH4/Phos 0 Temp 80.8 spec grav 1.025 I know that my dkH is way too high, but I can't figure out why it got that high. I have a calcium reactor, using ARM aragonite media...

    Caulerpa problem, Please Help

I think that 2-3 weeks would do the trick. From what I have read though, you may be able to go shorter if you can acheive a complete black out, meaning you should cover the tank with a thick blanket or something similar to keep out all the ambient room light.

    Filter sock question

Thanks. I can't believe how much crap I'm getting caught in my sock, and with only 9 small fish in my 75 gallon. I plan on keeping it on until it doesn't look so bad.

Cleaning out a 100 gallon feed trough

I agree. Any chlorine left will be a small amount and will off-gas.
