    How much is too much...

So you have TDS meter, and have checked the output? Unless those cannisters in the picture are 55g drums, I'm 99.9% sure you're not going to get anywhere close to 1200 gallons putting carbon filtered tap water through there. [Edit: Maybe the literature on your unit says 1200 gallon capacity...

    How much is too much...

Just watch your TDS - you're going to blow through that DI resin reeeaaaallll quick. It ain't gonna be cheap with that big of a tank. I use a DI system (no RO), but only have a 46g. Just a hunch, but looking at how much water you've run through it already, I'd guess the DI resin is shot by now...

Which Phosphate Remover Product is the best?

 Oh... sorry. Shouldn't laugh at others' misfortunes, but your description was pretty good! Also, when using any of the GFOs, rinse them in RO/DI water very well if it says to in the instructions. Don't blow off that instruction or you'll end up with hazy brown water. But probably not as...

    Am I a Blasto?

Just from size alone, I'd say wellsi. Very nice shot!

NEdd to know what this Brown Stuff in my Tank Is?

Hard to tell, but it looks like diatoms. Have all those fish been in there for 2 years, or have you just added one? Also, when was the last time you changed your lights?

    Losing faith in Salifert.

Don't mean to drag this too far off topic, but no... that's not necessarily true. It depends on the company. Just because a company holds an ISO certificate doesn't mean it's going to be better than one without. ISO certification just means you have a set of procedures that you can be audited...

    Losing faith in Salifert.

Doing a little research on LA's whois info, looks like the domain owner of their website has the same address as these folks... http://www.seadsolutions.com/index.html Also... ISO certification doesn't mean squat. I've been involved in ISO programs before and all it means to be ISO certified...

    Cycle almost over

Just FYI, you'll need a nitrite test to know when the cycle is over. If you don't have any critters in the tank after the cycle (hopefully you don't) you can do as large as water changes as you want. Only reason for small ones is so you don't change the water parameters too much in one shot...

    Where is my calcium going?

Oops... sorry. You did say that in your first post and I just missed it. Hmmm... IO coming in at 400? That with the Salifert kit? That seems pretty high - I'm thinking more like 340 normally. Other than test kit error, not sure why you can't get the Ca up. How much TurboCalcium were you adding...

    What is your alkalinity?

    Reasoning with nutrients and algae

This little gem of advice just needs to be repeated. It's the cardinal rule of troubleshooting any system. Take the shotgun approach, and you may fix the problem but you don't know what problem you fixed.

    running carbon

Thanks for the explanation. I use the Black Diamond stuff on occasion too, and yeah... it's pretty dusty. When it gunks up your skimmer, is it just that the fines coat everything and you either have to clean it constantly to regain its efficiency, or is it something else?

    running carbon

"Good dirty carbon"? Is that like saying the best of the worst?! Just trying to figure out what you meant!

1st set of tests for my reef - input welcomed

I'm assuming you're also testing for ammonia and nitrites and they're both at zero meaning your cycle is complete? If not... those are two more you should be testing for. Along with pH. Nitrates are high, but for just finishing a cycle it's to be expected. Water changes will bring that down...

    Testing Question

Levels will balance out given time and aeration. Measuring pH levels of distilled/pure/RO water is kinda pointless. In theory, distilled water IS 7.0 pH because it's the definition of neutral. But any little impurity in the water - either from the container or the process or the air - will throw...

    Where did the science go?

Very well said and 100% absolute truth.

If I am starting a new tank......

Give any skimmer at least a week to reach full potential. Some may be cleaned better from the factory than others, but any residue on the plastic/acrylic can cause it to not skim well at first. Agree with the concern about putting the live rock in the tub though - lots of soap residue in there...

    Black Ick?

Have you got a torch or frogspawn in the tank? My guess is that the clown was getting a bit too friendly with a torch coral.

    Aptasia???

 And you don't want that to happen because you've got a pretty cute kid! (Assuming that's your kid in your avatar picture!) Whatever you do, do NOT try to manually remove it with a knife, screwdriver, corkscrew, etc. You'll only manage to shred it into bits that will float to the...

Whats going on with my mushroom??

Is there any chance it's not dying? Sure... it just could be seriously ticked off. But it doesn't really matter because there's nothing you can do. Except cross your fingers!
