    Electricity Costs

$.0628/KwH - Avista utilities (eastern WA) I figure the tank costs about $40/month- not sure I could do the $200 it would cost with those Cali prices:shock:

    Aquacultured vs. Wild Livestock

So my take on propagated corals is that if it was grown in captivity and no "wild" tissue or skeleton is in the frag- then it is aquacultured, IMO simply fraging a wild colony and letting the frags encrust doesn’t make it truly aquacultured- I think there is a grey area with the first and maybe...

    Aquacultured vs. Wild Livestock

When buying coral from a retailer- aqucultured is the way to go! Fish are another story- like Charlie said. And I put other cuz I also have a fair amount of wild stuff the vast majority of which is "second hand" so not really wild or cultured??? Cheers, Tracy

Bob-Let me know the name and the specs when you get it going so I can check it out. Passinetti2007- Formula one cubes is what I started out with too- the fish love it and I will continue to feed for them. However it is bound with gelatin so I doubt the particle sizes get small enough for...

Thanks for the clarification vic! looks like the bioclean is a few strains of nitrifying bacteria and some trace element that the company claims "speeds up the reproduction of purifying bacteria" Interesting that they do recommend dosing bacteria weekly! and the biogest is amino acids, fatty...

IndyMatt and swissgaurd, Thanks-The prodibio site was a little confusing I saw a lot of supplements but not a food- what do you use swissgaurd? IndyMatt- I like that for a blendered recipe- I find it interesting that they use the golden perals in there own commercialized mix- might be worth...

Yeah- I think your right Don, thing is most research I am aware of says that heterotrophic feeding is at least as important as autotrophic and that you can never get close to food particle availability on the reef so I still want to find alternative supplements(sufficient nutrient export to...

    lets talk Reef Foods

DonW I am with you on the good feeding, nutrient export, and fish poop "supplements". Still, I want to get input on other supplements. I have a fish low environment anyway. The trend right now seems to be these blended food mixes and it seems many people are using one of the "established"...

    lets talk Reef Foods

So DonW- you would not recomend the blue coral method or bacteria straight up? Is it your impression that blended freash food mixes are not being used directly to any great degree? Would not feeding the spectrum 10x day also be a way of cranking up the volume on bacterial production in the...

Hi SueT, Thanks for chiming in! With the Papone- do you know what particle sizes you are getting? And is it your impression that the corals eat it directly or that it feeds zooplankton and bacteria that the corals then eat? Cheers

Fly guy- sounds like a Blue Coral Method, Pappone, or Eric Borneman recipe. There was a debate on weather any of it even blended to liquid was small enough for some corals (mainly sps) to consume directly- The theory is as DonW suggests above that fish eat it and produce waste that the corals...

Thanks for all the input guys- I hope this will become a very informational thread we can all learn from. Salmonslayer, I agree that heavy feeding and also that heavy skimming and water changes are important to get food to your corals- even the photosynthetic ones- and then get the excess out...

My feeds and some questions I also have some more specific questions/food for thought. First my tank: the current biotope is salt water;) (I have LPS, SPS, zoas, clams, rics, fish, shrimp, tube worms) with this wide range of organisms I try to give a varied diet. I grow Isochrysis...

OK lets talk reef foods-zooplankton substitutes etc. There are more and more options now for feeding your reef (a good thing). Some are better then others and so many things to consider. SO I would like to here from people about what they have had success with as far as foods for mixed reef...
