    Xenia question

SR comes up with some good observations but I will argue temp with him all day. My tank runs 80-81 degrees. Have not lost a single stalk to other then fragging. The following link is where I share my other observations of xenias...

    Why is my pH low?

I'd lay off the purple up . If you want to dose calcium do it with a two part solution like B-ionic or C-balance. I know I'm gonna get flammed here but get yourself an AP test for KH/GH while your at it so we could also get a look your alkalinity situation. AP tests have been pretty accurate for...

    Easy 2 parter for you....

Question about chlorine. I'm getting a bit paranoid about my tank now that my three year old is getting REALLY into the curiosity stage. 1. Will chlorinated tap water kill any and all microbes/bacteria that get rinsed in it (cleaning off tank implements during routine tank chores etc)? 2. Air...

Newbies guide to the nano reef

Xeniidae "Now thats a crabgrass problem, Mister" Tim Allen once said. I bring this up because of my experience with these soft corals is that they can get out of control quickly. I've posted many times before that I have a "dirty" tank. Some old salts cringe when I tell them what my readings...

Newbies guide to the nano reef

What you get when you cross animal with plant.... ...or I had a really messed up childhood. This will be a "primer" of sorts to get us all in the proper frame of mind (put down the bong dude). I will not try to get all medieval here and force fancy dead languages down your throat. I look at...

    Is temp. important

3 degrees could be boderline- not good. Try to keep the swing to two degrees or less. If you're running a tank heater, bump it up a degree and see if the swing is less. If not a small fan running while the lights are on may help. Jenn-coo-ya.

    Nitrate??

Chem pure is a media that is bagged and is an alternative to carbon. I like it, just remember to rinse before you place it.

    Can fish over eat?

How you feed is just as important as to how much. Dumping said food in is not so good. Introduce the food in small amounts, let them clear it before the next helping. Using different areas of the tank each time is a good idea to explore. We all have the "hog" that will try to get everything, if...

    Can fish over eat?

More food= more crap. Certain foods will contain phosphates, esp. manufactured. Fish in their natural setting, spend alot of their energy looking for and capturing food, so naturally they are somewhat under fed in the real world. It's impractical to provide an all day buffett so stick to a 2-3x...

Newbies guide to the nano reef

Thanks Nick, Ill give it the old college try. In regards to the polyp, I looked at a bunch of protopalythoas and as I did a few pics of neozoanthus looked more like what I got. Funny thing is, that they are not like other zoa's in that they appear to be non colonial. I'll try an overhead when I...

Newbies guide to the nano reef

Notice the tissue growth, its taking over the the skeleton. Yes, before I get taken to the woodshed, I do have a bubble problem and I think a small mithrax might do the trick. Only 16 shopping days left, your old Uncle Mike likes small electronics only......

    Notarchus Indicus, yeah or nay?

Thanks Leslie. I took a pic and spent a bunch time on the sea slug sight. I also saw this sucker mow down hair algae at my request at the store. Also seen him chow down on all algae but bubble. So not sure. It has the both of the "blow" holes fore and aft. I'll get a pic and post but this may be...

    Notarchus Indicus, yeah or nay?

What say the salts around here? Someone asked me since they are selling them at an lfs, and this person has a major league hair problem. Peaceful reef set up and after it finishes can sheets of macro be fed? How big do they get? Went surfing on the net but could not get an answer to these...

    coral i.d.

Funny thing about xenia that I've observed since I'm farming the fraggin things all of the time. Want them to grow like weeds, dirtier tank, potassium iodide supplement (lot less then directed). If they end up in really high flow, the arms stretch out, I measured one to be 5 inches in length...

    How Much Sand?

I would do 2-3"s of sand. Just me being me. That way you could get some of the more interesting verts and inverts that like to burrow. But it's up to you in the end. Good luck.
