    Help needed about Fish

For future reference, look for information using it's Latin name, not common name. There is oodles of good information out there on this species. This is actually a very reef friendly fish but as with any of it's Genus, that may change as it matures. Sessile invertebrates are of no consequence...

How do you get a blind fish to eat?

You can wedge a gel bound food into some sort of clip so it's stationary but other than that there's not too much you can do. Reducing the salinity some (20-21.5 ppt) and adding some vitamin B12 will help. The fish must be eating something though, the damsel could not possibly last 3-4 months...

    Hector's goby

I should have mentioned this before but be wary where the hair algae alternatives come from. Any unquarantined additions can add more problems. Be very sure the rock/algae does not come from a fish system or one that has had fish in it for 8 weeks back. If your unsure or cannot get verification...

    Ick

The instances of this parasite in the wild cannot be effectively quantified. It is most definitely not nonexistent in reef area's but nowhere near the level some exaggerate to either. In any given reef, your looking at 20-30% depending on habitat, fish species etc. Among reef fish populations it...

    Algae refugium vs. Xenia refugium

For it to work properly, the current nutrient level would need to be on the low side by itself. Xeniids will not do well in a nutrient soup where nitrates are a concern. If on the lower side >5 ppm, the Xennids will work but they must be harvested for it to be of any benefit to the system...

    Which Vitamins to use

Most are pretty much the same. Each has a brand preference but as long as you use a vitamin and a HUFA additive, you're all good. For those using garlic, it's an "OK" antioxidant, but really not much more.

    Hector's goby

It will definitely foul the tank as well as significantly raising phosphate levels. Try to get a mesh plastic clip or make one yourself that does not allow the Nori et al to float/sit freely in the tank. Sandwiching it between two grated pieces of plastic will allow it to remain in the tank...

    Achilles Tang

No worries, go ahead with the hypo! Just keep a close eye on the faded scale area for redness. If it's simple depigmentation is will continue to "fade" as the normal pigmentation returns. If it remains/gets larger or spreads becoming red, Vibriosis or Uronema may be a concern but it's...

    crocadilel fish

Cymbacephalus beauforti is an ambush predator. Small fin fish are it's main prey item. Not a community tank species and grows to about 2 ft.

Are the scales you refer to the "tear drop" mark or different? If so are they standing on end/jagged or missing/faded? I would say it's safe to go ahead with the hypo treatment if that's your goal. There would appear to be no concern for other parasites so far and antibiotics will not be a...

    Hector's goby

Amblygobius hectori's primary diet is alga based, benthic Crustacea and worms. They are foremost herbivores. Offering special foods that are made up mostly of marine algae will benefit them by far. It wouldn't hurt to drape a sheet of Nori on a rock near there territory once in a while as well...

Has anyone got a group of PB tangs?

Excellent replies all!! I would add more but I think the important issues have been asked/answered. I do not want a good discussion to dwindle down to the nitty gritty so I hope we can leave this here. I think Don's last sentence sums it up nicely!

As Ed indicated, frozen is the easiest. Be sure it's mainly florets though. It's very important the broccoli is either prefrozen for several weeks or blanched prior to feeding. The fibers in the broccoli must be broken down before feeding. That goes for any similar types foods as well.

    Tales from the Crypt-ocaryon

Are those images of the fish in general or with actual parasites present? With the coloration of this fish, I would expect Crypt (or any parasite) to be much more visible and easily identifiable than what you've posted. I don't even see any depigmentation areas. That's not to suggest there...

    Tales from the Crypt-ocaryon

The three day transfer method works very well but there is a great amount of stress involved and there is a higher mortality rate than that of just using hyposalinity. It is still a very good treatment when done correctly though. Shaun, Why use a hydrometer if refractometers are accessible? I...

Need more advice on SnowFlake Eel...

I think you may have misread/misunderstood my posts and the originating one of Lynne's. I am fairly certain this eel was injured and not the result of poor juvenile growth... I cannot believe some who might allow a tank to come to this state would care for an animal with health concerns such as...

Cryptocaryon irritans or "ich" does not "appear" through any amount of distress of the fish. It is either present or it's not. It can be eliminated 100% of the time when guarded against correctly and prevented from entering an established system. That means anything wet must be QT'd for a...
