    Anyone remember that old Deep Purple song...Scum on the wa....no wait that was Smoke on the water. Anyway. I have a lot of brown scum like material floating on the top of my reef tank. It has been running very clean for many months and my nitrates are below 10ppm. Any idea what it is?

    Well, I think my tank is recovering now. It has appeared to complete it's nitrogen cycle. The ammonia levels are almost "0" and the Nitrates have climbed a little. Once I get my nitrates down some I would very much like to get a few of your leathers. Thanks

    Thanks for all your suggestions. Sounds like I'm not going to have to start over entirely, but let the tank recycle a bit. I must have a pretty healthy goby, blue damsel and "Nemo" and a few other softs that have survived. Should I continue with daily water changes (25%)?

    FRom another forum, it was suggested to use boiling water through a syringe. I tried that and it appears to have killed them deader than the perverbial "door nail"! This was a great suggestion.     Actually m ine idi overflow a little at first befotre it got broke in. I cut an inch long piece of clear tubing and added to the overflow connection to extend down to the top of the chamber. Works great now. If I need to move the collection cup down then I just remove the tube extension.
