    Dragonegg's Tank Status

Some tank inhabitants here... these guys don't typically hang out together but today they seemed to enjoy the photo op. I have a pair of picasso perculas that enjoy the front left corner of the tank. I recently dropped in a large brain coral and that has drawn the attention of my Chevron Tang...

    Dragonegg's Tank Status

I finally made some finishing touches on the tank set up and added some new coral thanks to ARSA. I suspended the LED light fixtures from the vaulted ceiling. This is a welcome changes as I was previously using rails that ran fore/aft resting on the rim of the tank. The rails were kinda cool...

    New to the Site,

All good questions from Kirk... the challenge with this hobby is there are so many variables and no one right answer. It seems that water quality is the problem so checking all the params you can is the best start. Don't know if the crab/snail issue is related to the hair algae... but it could...

    vortech mp40w

Yeah the pulse mode sound bugs me. Have you tried the reefcrest mode? How big is your tank? I have mine on opposite ends of a 5ft long by 30in wide tank and and get decent turbulent flow. They make a bit more noise than tunze especially when you are in a variable flow setting. A constant...

    New to the Site,

I guess one thing to check would be your TDS of your 'tap' water. Phosphate buildup could be a concern. Other than that I will have to defer to the gang here.

    vortech mp40w

I am quite happy with mine. Noise has always been a prime concern with for me since the DT is in our living room but I found that running about 3/4 speed reef crest mode and I set it into night mode earlier in the evening now (wife is happier while reading or watching a movie).

    It's Been Great

Yep thank you Chuck! This place has been an incredibly valuable tool for me and the entertainment and good hearts of many who contribute make this best forum I know! Take care!

    Favorite Little Tank Gadget?

I voted for magnet algae scraper but after reading thru this thread I have to say I sure appreciate the auto water topoffs. I have two. One for sump and other for fresh RO storage.

    pH drop - why?

I was thinking the same. They still impress me with their power. I have two 40s opposite a 5ft tank. Am thinking of a couple of maybe of 10s to put on the back wall near the surface to better stir the oxygen and develop even more random flow which I have to say is not bad (using reef crest mode).

    Bullet Proof

 LOL Jason! As someone that has had the pleasure of firing a few rounds with you... I am wondering what took you so long

    pH drop - why?

Other than being difficult because most of the spa-flex (drain and return) is fished through the basement ceiling (hey I actually have a fishing pole stuck up there that is still just beyond arms reach!)... I wonder whether that will buy me much but the sump cover is proving to be quite...

    pH drop - why?

Yes I have them relatively near the surface and I would like to go higher to get more break on the surface tension but I generate a vortex/funnel as it draws from topside of the unit. At 6.5in depth (center of vortech) I don't get a funnel. At 6in depth I do and that is at 3/4 power.

    pH drop - why?

The good news is I think I solved my heating problem with the styrofoam cover over most of my sump. Now I might not have to invest in a bigger heater. I am running three 200w heaters in the sump (200gal total system) but being that it is in the cool basement and I have about a 30ft run to/from...

    pH drop - why?

Okay thanks... I just figured with an rimless DT fully exposed and a small return area also exposed on my sump where the return is it wouldn't change the pH as much as it did. Is it possible that my pH in my DT is much different? Unfortunately due to other problems with my Elos 160XL set up...

    pH drop - why?

I just built an insulated cover for my sump due to system heat loss as the house is running cooler these days and my heaters aren't keeping up. I noticed that with no other changes, my pH has dropped from 8.4 to 8.1 in two days. Could this simply be due to the cover on the sump?
