    Sea Urchin

The last time I kept urchins was when I lived in Iowa. I got them from the store in Moline IL. (can't remember the name anymore) They were the black long spine type and they were easy to breed and great algae mowing machines. I never had a problem with them eating anything other than algea...

    Me, Myself, & Sherman too.

I made it over to Johnathan's tonight and I have to say that is one kick butt set-up. As nice as things look in the pics, it is much better in person. Thanks Johnathan, I had a good time. I was able to pick up some really good ideas and hopefully give back one or two.

    New Cube 36x36x18

http://www.quickwall.com.au/SpecSheet/Doc/CoatingSystemsBrochure.pdf I have made plenty of rocks with Grey Portland cement type 1 and 2. I have also made a few with white Portland type 1. I've never used Quickwall. Since it is listed as an acrylic polymer with cement I would think it would...

Best magnet cleaners for acrylic tanks?

bummer Vicki, I have tried like hell to get the great white apart but it doesn't want to play nice. I all most pulled the bench over on myself using the vice and a pipe wrench. If I bolted the bench to the wall and had a couple guys hold the bench still, I think I can twist them apart. :doubt:

    Lock Line Return Flow ?

stepping down to 1/2 will not give you better flow, it will produce pressure. The 3/4 will give you max flow but at 800 gph it won't feel like a blast of water. If you reduce and split it into 2 1/2 returns, you will keep the flow and also pick up some pressure.

    I am finally going BIG!!

Yes, the center braces are a very good idea. Without them the centers will bow out and most likely the corners on top will crack.\ I was talking about weld-on 40. It is a 2 part mix that is similar to epoxy. It is great for filling gaps, making repairs and is preferred for building tanks...

    I am finally going BIG!!

I really don't mean to rain on your parade, I love the 5 x 2 x 2, 180gal tank. I just wanted to let you know what to look out for. Another option would be to replace the top all together. Then you can still have a one piece top but make the cut-outs into 3 sections. If you make the top with...

    I am finally going BIG!!

Any mod to the tank will void the warranty, if you have one. That being said, yes you can weld the pieces to the top. Either on top or under the top. If you want to use 40 and some masking tape you can also put them even with the top. A bunch of wet sanding and no one will know it wasn't...

    Technically Challenged in Lynnwood, WA

Yup, same problem. All the ones I have are pretty much bullet proof, but they are loud and hot. They do make great mixing pumps and trash pumps! I think a good coating of calcium actually quiets them down a bit. :p

    I am finally going BIG!!

U should worry. I don't recommend putting a 400w over the center brace. It will overheat and cause problems with the acrylic. The distortion in the material will also pretty much kill the whole point of using a 400w in the first place. You could all ways put in 2 offset braces and cut out...

    Coraline cleanup question

Yes. Fill the tank with tap water, get a plastic scraper and go to town. You are going to have to buff it anyway so might as well get her done fast!

    Free Acrylic Scrap

Sounds good Ed. Hey Krish, as soon as I am done restoring my sail boat (sometime in the next decade), I'll be on my way!

    Free Acrylic Scrap

I'm doing an early spring cleaning. I have (literally) tons of scrap acrylic. 1/8 thick upto 1 1/2", some blue and black. It's all gotta go. I thought I would offer it to anyone that wants it. It's totally free, you just have to pick it up. I'll keep it throught the weekend, but then it's...

    How Do You Eliminate Aiptasia?

Much like Johnathan, I have tried pretty much every med on the market with limited and mixed results. Boiling water and vinegar work really well. Kalk works fairly well but the aptasia can be tough and come back. I also severely damaged my poor hammer with some kalk overspray, so I quit doing...

I'm going to try and make it to the meeting.. sound like a great speaker and subject. I would also like to reunite Ed with his calcium reactor! :)

    Gracilaria sp. Culturing

I have not had very good luck with the red or brown Gracilaria sp., I have ordered a lot of it from Ocean Riders in Hawaii and it goes knuts for them. You might want to contact them and see if they have any pointers. The green Gracilaria I get from ORA grows fine in my fuge but the red and...

    snails

snails get everywhere! Most especially after your tank has matured and they start breeding. Baby snails end up in everything. Aside from that, I have had a few floods from both turbo and astrea snails getting into the drain pipes and clogging them.

    Technically Challenged in Lynnwood, WA

put the air hose in the U tube from the front. You don't want to try and draw water throught the tube, you want to pull the air out of the tube and the water will follow across. Also make sure the overflow box is primed (full of water). Too bad it isn't Saturday, I was just over there. Good luck

    Rubbermaid Sump Design Ideas??

thanks for the plug Will ! DisturbedReefer is giving you good info. You don't have to buy a sump from me, but I strongly advise against the small rubbermaid tubs for a sump. They bow out like a football and I have had two of them over the years blow apart at the molded seem. Since you are...
