    Spawning event. Pretty cool

I had such a mini brittle star spawning event right after stirring up the tank. In other words, I seems to be able to trigger the event. Curious if others noticed this spawning was random, or triggered by some environmental factor (which of course could perhaps be repeated!)

    live rock and sand questions

This discussion on building a sand bed was helpful to me, and I used it as the basis of my 240G build. Guide to Successful Live Sand Substrates Obviously there are many ways to skin a cat, but this may be helpful. Also, are you looking for detrivores/cops ... in addition to bacteria. I...

    my first sump design

Be sure to factor in warping before you begin; perhaps that is already done, but it's hard to tell from your photo. For example, I can assure you your design will gradually bow outward at the top center of the longer of the side panels. This can be mitigated by a clamp .. I know this becuase I...

    where to find live sand

Of course, just "moving" a sand bed with cause a loss of life. When I moved my 100G reef (when we purchased a new home), my system never fully recovered because the longterm stratification of the sand bed was mixed/inverted/disturbed greatly by the move. You have to move, but expect the...

    Spa flex plumbing question

(Forgive if already covered above but ....) There is indeed a special pvc cement for flexible pvc piping. Weld-On® Specialty Cements: Flex PVC Cements | IPS Corporation Sounds like some have had success with the regular pvc pipe, but just know there is a special grade of this cement designed...

OMG! My Rose Anenome Just Got Grinded thru My Return Pump!

So, I placed an extra rose anemome in my sump, only for half of him to somehow pass my baffle wall with small holes in it, and thence got slurped/grinded up by my Baracuda return pump which then peppered the DT with 5-6 little pcs. Perhaps the anenome had actually split again, as I can't...

Who is using NSW in their reef?

As most of you know, there is mixed messages out there on the wire about benefit of using natual sea water for reef systems. I realize some folks do not recommend NSW, but there is a solid base of folks out there that uses it with success, including local public aquariums, etc. I am lucky to...

Best way to raise PH to 8.4-8.6

One thought (and forgive me if you've already discussed this one): You mentioned that you recently "moved" your tank. As you know, disturbing the plennum and all the established/thriving infauna within could cause a spike in algae as the system works to replentish lost life, diversity, etc...

Green Star Polyps? How Peel Off?

First of all, what are these? Three polyps came with some live rock I bought about 10 months ago. Now I have ten-twelve polyps ... and they're expanding too far. I'd like to offer to others, or sale, but can't figure out how to peel them off. I tried an exactor knife, but this seemed to tear...
