    FIRE!!! Yikes!!!

I am not an electrician but a power strip does not have moving parts to wear it down so only ambient factors (temperature changes, dust, humidity, etc) can wear it out or damage it. Unless it is so cheap and rated way below the load it carries and thus heat up will it wear down it's casing and...

    Barebottom Question..

i have hair algae problems and i did even more frequent water changes and strog skimming. hair algae still came but less faster this time. so i slowly bought turbo snails (added in small groups rather than one dumping). Now these critters clean the rocks of hair algae! worked fine for me.

    FIRE!!! Yikes!!!

that looks bad. it was good you were there when it happened. btw was it floor mounted? it would be better if it was wall mounted. Simply use a double adhesive tape or usually these have screws for mounting. again, good you got it caught in time.

    Heat Buildup Help

pumps generate heat as these have motors. i placed three 28 watt pumps in a 100 gallon FOWLR (2-flow, 1-skimmer) and the temp rose to 88. I replaced two used for flow with 10 watt powerheads and the temp dropped to 82.

    Please view ASAP!!

kalwasser should be dripped. ;) reefs are very stable environments which barely fluctuate in water ph, temp, sg., quality hence the critters there are more sensitive then, say, critters in rivers and lakes.

    newbie with questions????

Is the Fluval 404 a canister filter? If it is you might want to reconsider. A deep sand bed (DSB) when well made is still a good filtration option. Another is the addition of a sump. Saves you from a lot of headaches. Get a pre-drilled or have the tank drilled and an overflow installed. IMO:a...

    New Tank- filter questions

Good luck Bob. For lighting you might want to consider metal halide as your tank is deep (24"). Many pros and cons for a DSB as filtration but generally it is still the cheapest and easiest to build. 4-6" depth of aragonite sand for starters! Good seeding mix from Garf or a friend. LR 1.75lbs to...

    AZ-NO3 (Absolute Zero - Nitrates) - Thoughts?

That is right. I even keep LR in the unlighted sump to lessen the rockwork in the main tank. A matured DSB system works well in lowering nitrates. Mine however dropped it to almost zero but because of excessive feeding to a hippo tang (dang! eats a lot) it rose to 15ppm. Now stabilizes between...

    ZEOvit

excellent info curt. So I completely strip my system. My main problem is water top off. Too much silicates. I use filtered not RO/DI nowadays. I need to replace the busted RO/DI but don't have the funds now. I am now wet skimming to remove furthur. Any more ideas (besides even frequent water...

    Phosphate build up

Hello Mike/Mojo, and all. Great discussion here. I barely grasped it! Just my experience. When I started I used the jaubert/plenum method and from my understanding it uses a space (plenum) as a sink (not same way Collin used the word. similar) for various metals and toxins binding with water...

    Flow rate

Tank is a bit too deep. at 20.5" tall, I guess your water column goes down around (with 2.5" clearance on top, 4" for DSB) 15-16". NO-VHO-PC work well up to 12". So beyond 12" the light intensity drops considerably. Btw at this depth (16") an HQI or MH is recommended. In the IceCap website a...
