    unhappy clam

doh! yeah, dunno why I didn't put it there. (esp. since I'm the last person to have posted in that forum! ) doesn't get as much "traffic" as General Discussion, I guess. Can't figure out how to move or delete this thread, so re-posted.

    unhappy clam

I have a T. Crocea that started gaping earlier this week. (has been 3 days straight now.) Has all the bad symptoms: poor mantle extension, little/no reaction to shadow/shade. Tried to do everything correctly: -slowly acclimated it to my 250W MH over a 10 day period. -put in on the sandbed...

    My 20 Gallon Long......

You might want to stick with the HOB (or Skilter), I built my new fuge--"inspired" by your post---with just a MJ1200 PH. It's been running for a week now and is starting to get some pretty bad oily film on the surface. Probably because there's no HOB waterfall, and because I don't have my...

easiest way to clean acrylic check this out!!!!

I just used a sharp kitchen knife to split mine in half--mine was more like 3/8" thick but it was thin enough to stay under the hammerhead. (Also I left an old, worn pad on too--I figured the velcro hooks would tear into the eraser too much.)

easiest way to clean acrylic check this out!!!!

So glad I found this thread! Magic Eraser** + Hammerhead magfloat = BEST CLEANER EVER! I cut the eraser into pieces about 1/2" thick then sandwiched in between the hammerhead magnets--have some really stubborn green algae--it took it right off my glass in 5 swipes! It usually takes 2-3x more...

    Pyram Snail Ident./Behavior

Sure, and snails could almost certainly re-produce faster than crabs. But, the crab will kill 1 snail each time it wants a *new* shell... (and IME hermits can be pretty mean too--they'll kill a snail just because "it looked at me the wrong way"... ) Plus it's not always about what's...

    Pyram CRABS?

Hard to say... I certainly have hundreds of mobile snail-shells in my tank-- but am not ready to say that they're ALL tiny-crabs just yet. (I'm 4-for-4 so far--but want to do a lot more random samples before I'm sure.) My hope is that they're all crabs, and must have wiped out a whole pyram or...

Simultaneous "tall skimmer" and "skimmerless" threads??--you're a true Renaissance man! :p

    Pyram CRABS?

Ok, this is weird... I was worried that I had a massive pyramid snail infestation in my tank (http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45474 ) So I pulled 4 of the "snails" out of my tank and put them under a microscope-- trying to ID pyram vs. rissoid--but guess what i found...

    Pyram Snail Ident./Behavior

Nano-hermits! Did my daily clam check this morning (2 hrs before lights come on)--and I found zero "snails" on my Clam! :) But I had the dissection scope all setup already--so I thought I might as well use it... So I pulled 4 random "snails" off the rockwork, and started looking... But I...

    Pyram Snail Ident./Behavior

Thanks for the info. The snails in my tank are pretty fearless, I see them in the daytime too. Hopefully that will change once I can get a wrasse. (of course, just my luck no one--BR, SWC, nor BS--has any wrasses this week. ) Thanks for the tip on raising it off the sand--I bought a...

the best dry rock out there?

Matt- Kirk and I had a similar thread a few weeks ago: http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45080&highlight=base+rock http://www.marcorocks.com/ and http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/Eco-RoX-(-Fiji-Rock-)/c7/index.html were the only 2 that got good reviews then. But Tampa Bay...

    Pyram Snail Ident./Behavior

a "trap door"--now THAT's something I can understand, thank you! :) Now it's just matter of getting the tweezers and microscope and waiting for the little buggers to open, or close.

    Pyram Snail Ident./Behavior

Yep I have read that 1st article before and I actually work @Google---so am pretty familiar with Google Image Search. :p (and FWIW "pyramidellid snails" yields much better results IMO.) But was hoping someone could explain what a "parallel apical whorl" is, in layman's terms. This article...

the best dry rock out there?

What's their free shipping promotion? A special code or something? (all I saw on their website was $15 flat rate shipping, or free shipping if your order ships late...)

    Pyram Snail Ident./Behavior

Can someone help me identify pyramid snails? I've already read: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-09/jf/index.php and http://www.reefaquariumforum.com/my-clam-has-pyram-snails-now-what-do-i-do-t2760.html But I don't understand what it means to have an "apical shell whorl" that "runs...

70W halide Good? Bad? or Ugly?

Tried the feet only first. (except the leg-tracks were 14.5" apart, and the tank is only 12.5" wide.... so THAT should have been my first clue that I had too much light for the tank  ) I then switched to a DIY pedant setup (at 6", 8", then +12" off the tank.) It almost stayed cool...

    My 20 Gallon Long......

That's a really sweet fuge idea! Did you have use any special technique to prime the U-tube? I have a 6 gallon acrylic box that I was going to use as an ATO reservoir on my nano--but now I'm thinking "gravity-fed fuge" instead! :D I would have never dreamed up a simple U-tube and HOB setup...

70W halide Good? Bad? or Ugly?

Yeah, use T-5's or anything smaller than a 150W HM for the 20gallon. I made the mistake of putting an OuterOrbit fixture (150W HQI Halide + 130W of actinics) over my 20Tall and it was/is OVER-KILL! I had to get a small chiller just to keep the tank below 82*!! (It's not as hot as the sun...
