    iodine for xenia

The +/- of Iodine (being good for Xenia) is debated alot here on RF....( a lot of "it works for me" evidence is posted but no scientific proof yet....) I, personally, don't dose any iodine and my xenia grows like mad... (+ I don't like the idea of deliberatly dosing a chemical w/o being able to...

    ocean currents vs locline

Matt, you could probably create an alternating current scenario in your tank with your existing CL if you threw a SCWD and check-valve on it..... (With a check-valve in place the flow would switch between the red outlets and green outlets when the SWCD switches.)

    Astrea Snail Mass Spawning

Agreed. You may want to run a polishing fliter and/or carbon in the meantime. (Found my little T.Crocea dead the morning after a mass mini-star spawing--it was the only tank fatality.... but still I  becasue if I had addressed the water-quality that night, I might have saved him....):doubt:

A Hello! from a misplaced southerner.

Welcome to RF! We can't offer any sweet-tea, but we've got some lovely micro-brews for you to try.... I'm sure some others will chime in on online rock buying experiences--there's also usually a few people selling LR in the Livestock for Sale forums here... And if you haven't been...

    Chiller or Air Conditioner??

I love this board! (My first "saltwater-summer") And I saw a slight increase in my tank's temp this week--started looking at chillers, but didn't even think about the heat that would be exhausted into the house from the chiller! Now I plan on unpacking the A/C unit FIRST, then looking...

    Low alkalinity problems

Sounds like you need a "2nd opinion" on your test kit..... What kind of test kit are you using? You may want to get a new (Salifert ;) ) test kit (or have your water tested at a LFS) before begining any major ALK adjustments...

You know your a dedicated reefer when...

You know you're an obessed reefer when you walk into work covered in salt-creep.... (.....because I was mixing up "a quick batch" of DIY Mg supplement in the morning, but forgot that 1 gal of water + 8 cups of Epsom salts won't all fit in a 1 gallon jug....spill water all over the counter...

    Quick Dropping Alk

Don't see mention of a Mg test.... If ALK and CA are swinging, couldn't low Mg levels be a culprit....

    Coming to your lfs!

    Now THAT's a bio-LOAD! (I don't think that's a black sand bed, I bet it's a BB w/ an 1" of fish poop! )

    Caught red handed!

Just to play devil's advocate here: But is that starfish The Cause or The Effect of a dying coral? Most stars are scavengers, right? They eat whatever they can get their little "feet" on.... To put it another way, I could post this picture of vultures and say "Aha! see, the vultures are...

Need a hang on skimmer and light for my new 90gl?

A bump for an AquaC Remora **Pro version** ("old reliable" I like to call it.) No priming, no ventri-tubes--just plug it in and watch it GO! (Used units can sometimes be found on eBay for $200 or less...)

14" Sebae Anemone Tell me what you think?

Nope, not on my watch. (but when I got the tank, I was told they were a "mated pair"--so maybe sometime down the road.....)

14" Sebae Anemone Tell me what you think?

Must be something about those Maroon clowns.... ;) ....that makes "nems" grow so BIG!:p Here's some pics of my LTA, his name is Aku. (I don't think he's quite as big as yours--maybe only 12" across  )

    test kits?

For Calcium, Magnesium, and Alkalinity tests--Salifert is hands-down the MOST preferred brands here on RF. Their nitrate and phosphate kits are pretty good too ;) (I personally use a cheaper brand for my pH, ammonia and nitrite kets--mostly because {once the tank has cycled/matured} I don't...

    Magnesium dosing recipe

Great! (Has anyone spotted it in any Asian Markets on the Eastside?)

dKH and Alk are too high

(My $.02) Test kits = salifert, salifert, Salifert! If the "pH buffer" youre using is a dry, white powder...DON'T add any more pH buffer! (most likely it's just baking soda + "ingredient X") And adding baking soda to your tank will quicly RAISE YOUR ALK again. (And it doesn't take much...

THAT water gets heavy! But it makes so much difference

ugh. that's alot of water--Gaby you must have the buffest arms on the block!:) :p I'm luckier--in a 1-story house--so I just use an old mag-2 and a food-safe "garden"-hose to pump it from my garage to the dining room during water-changes. ...speaking of which--guess what weekend chore didn't...

    xenia is gone...

Be careful with "iodine tests"---"iodine" is present in many forms in seawater (and can rapidly change chemical phases) Commerical test kits will not detect these changes--as a result you can overdose! Here's is an excerpt from 1 of the articles linked below: "What About Dosing? I would...

    Magnesium dosing recipe

Don, Are you using straight nigari or a blend of nigari + epsom salts? (like a hybrid version of Randy's recipe #3, below) If so, it would be great if someone on RF had the wherewithall to update the mg portion of the online calculator to include nigari..... "2. Using MAG flake only...

    Fish Stores Up North?!

I vote for Barrier Reef (in Renton) and Reef Mystique in Everett (just Google it  ) But if you're stuck in traffic on the 405 and want a break--you could always stop halfway in-between at: Saltwater City in (Bellevue) or Blue Sierra Exotics (in Issaquah).
