    FINALLY!! :D:p.

Great looking canopy! But I didn't see any fans/vents..... U might want to pay extra-close attention to your tank temp for a few days.... (I know my 80 gal tank gets pretty hot with just 1 MH bulb running!)

    Nitrates

(As I said I'm sumpless-so I don't have have exp. with it but...) Yep (Chaeto is a macro algae) so lighting over the sump would be needed. If "a picture is worth a thousand words" than this vid. (of cheato in optimal growing conditions--notice the tumbling motion) must be worth alot more...

    Nitrates

Yes, adding chaeto sure would help--but that's a big change from a sumpless tank! (buying the overflow, return pump, plumbing etc. = $$$, or $$$$)

    Nitrates

I have a similiar-sized tank [80 gal with 100# LR, .5-1.5" sandbed] but no sump. And I have similiar nitrate levels {but don't tell anyone  } I avg. 20ppm, w/peaks at 35-40ppm between WCs, and usually won't get below 10ppm (even right after a sizable WC)..... I know that ultimately I'm...

DIY Pickling lime doser, made better??

I guess I'm a little confused--it seems like a lot of the design here is to "minimize stirring of the sediment"--I thought it was best TO STIR UP the sediment periodically! (I have a submersible pump on a daily timer in my kalk bucket for that sole purpose.....) Regardless, a bump...

what dose your wife/hubby say about your hobby

My wife hates how many times I (we) go to a LFS. She almost flipped one time when I stopped at Upscales in Portland during an Ore. road-trip ("Why are we going THERE?!??" she said... "it's not like they're going to have anything NEW, it's going to be the EXACT SAME STUFF YOU'VE SEEN AT ALL...

    Specific gravity question

Here's some good reading to start: http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2007-03/rhf/index.php (There's alot more articles in the RF Resource Library.) 1.021 is a bit low. (Most people w/reefs run closer to natural saltwater levels like 1.025-1.026) Though it sounds like you have a FO tank, so...

    Tds

FWIW: My RO/DI TDs meter usually reads 25-30ppm on the input. (It's a cruddy meter with a resolution of +/-20ppm @ that range.) But, yes, my tap water (from Kirkland/NorthShore PUD) is in the sub-50ppm range...

    Seattle aquarium water

I'm no expert--but won't a UV sterlizer only neutralize organic lifeforms like algea, bacteria, parasites etc. (i.e. if the contaminant is phosophates, or heavy metals, or plain old "pollution"--would a UVsterlizer do anything to it?) That's, of course, separate from the the issue of $$$...

    Seattle aquarium water

Well if you're in PA then you're about 2,800 miles away from the aquarium....so it shouldn't be too hard for U to avoid! But for those of us in zip 980XX--well.... we still hear (and have to resist) that siren's call of $.05 water ... :doubt:

    New Clams - ID suspect....

I'm betting that Jesse got those 2 beauties in Kirkland, about 2 blocks NE of downtown.... I know becuase I really wanted to out-bid/steal them when I was there Fri. afternoon. ;) They looked REALLY nice--esp. that "Squammy-maxima"! )

    To Remora Owners

Phew, happy to hear you liked the Silencer idea--I was afraid Sherman and I were going to get called for thread-hijacking! ;)

    To Remora Owners

Glad it worked! That little piece of paper/plastic/foam sure can make a big difference! :D (But don't worry--in a week you'll forget how loud it ever was and--if you're like me--you'll move on to the next thing like, "How can I make a silencer for my nosiy {canopy cooling fans}?" )

    To Remora Owners

Yeah, If you've modded an extra air-hole then it definitely souldn't be an air-flow issue! (of course a silencer, if it does work, won't be as silent on your unit since the more fresh air in = more noise out  ) I guess it could be some chemical quirkiness with the the paper towel... I...

    To Remora Owners

Hmm.. I've never experienced this. (My first attempt at a silencer was an old, plastic algae-scraping-sponge from my FW days--it had nice big, open "cells". Eventually I switched to the denser closed-cell foam for better noise muffling.) I could see where if you were using something...

Does anyone have an opinion on feeding units?

Here's some brief reviews to look over (wish they had pics though!) http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/foodcare/tp/TPautofeeders.htm I use 2 feeders when I'm on vac. The "daily double" (for pellets) and the FishMate 14 (for flakes/misc.) Both are "okay" IMO. The FishMate feeds slowly over a...

    To Remora Owners

You must not have the D-I-Y "silencer" for yours! :) (otherwise you'd always remember to replace the screw) Silencer = folded ,wet paper towel* laid over top of the intake tube (where that screw is). It can dramtically reduce the hissing noise that comes from the first chamber.... (*...

    To Remora Owners

BTW: has anyone ever put a heater into a Remora?? I've got a Catlina (titanium) heater that looks ugly on the glass--been thinking about tucking it into that huge Remora output chamber......

    To Remora Owners

{80 gallon sumpless} I clean the cup about twice a week; the whole unit, only once so far... (had the Reomora for about 2 months now) FWIW: I pull about as much skimmate as theJ pics show, per day. (I've got the external drain-line, so it's hard to gauge the daily take--but I like to check...

Is there any way to promote certain colors of coralline algae

Actually, you have TOTAL control over your lighting...(lighting adjustments are often made by first opening your wallet or purse...)
