Favite hemisphere not getting light on all sides

I can see what your talking about in your signature picture Myteemouse. That is clever i never realized the sand could reflect light so nice.

Favite hemisphere not getting light on all sides

The surgery might be tricky because i dont want to break the new tissue the favite has started growing onto the base rock. But im thinking this will be the best solution because additional lighting will still create shadows when lit from the top. There is no way to reflect lighting onto that...

Favite hemisphere not getting light on all sides

Here are the photos. The tank is definately a lot brighter but the photos allow you to see the shadow area. Also the last photo is a pick before lights on to show you my lighting setup.

    Tank turned 41 years old

Thats really a beauty, i like the natural/tropical mixed approach. My Dad used to dive in NY Harbor quite a bit when he was young. He used to teach marine biology at Rutgers and Wagner college and he would take his students in the winter out to dive. He told me lots of funny stories with girls...

Favite hemisphere not getting light on all sides

I have an awesome favite the size of an adult hand, the problem is that its shaped like a hemisphere. So light only really hits the front and top, but this creates a shadow. The tissue has started to recede on the side and back, I want to figure out what to do to maximize all areas of the...

    Moon or brain?

I NOW think this is a Favia, moon coral but formally thought it a brain coral. The reason for the knowing the difference is placement in the tank. Luckily this guy has been doing well on the substrate for 2mos, but i know read that moon corals should be placed on rock or hard surfaces. Anyone...

Caulpera has lost color! warning sign?

Interesting theory with the powerheads, i agree the rocks and sand should be doing more denitrification at this point. Bill, i will definately take you up on that offer and send you a pm.

    Localized Xenia Extermination

atlantisaquatic, i think what you were worried about is what i have heard the toxin from xenia can have on hard corals. "They can become a nuisance in tanks with slower growing stony corals. When injured or dying, they can release toxins. Carbon filtration and prompt removal of injured/dying...

i dosed a cap full of amquel plus to lower nitrates and ammonia, im going to restock my fuge with chaeto when i can get my hands on some. I have several powerheads, a koralis nano, and a penguin 115 with wavemaker wheel. I run a seaclone 100 skimmer, and i use filtered water from the aquafina...

Caulpera has lost color! warning sign?

red slime algea has been in both, but more so in the fuge now. Fuge lighting I have a 13w (60w equivalent) energy efficient bulb in a construction light reflector. Definately bright! No test for phosphates, ph 8.2, ammonia <0.25, nitrate 5-10 ppm, nitrite 0 I had tried 24 hr fuge cycle with...

    New Pics: Project 375

wow that stinks. That has happened to me also, first see the visual stress discoloration then lose them. It will be hard to guess what caused its stress because it was a new fish, but water quality changes, access to food, and bullying are usually top three.

quite a big aquarium looks great for all the new fish. You probably have more experience then me, but the spots of the emperor look like normal stress.
