    any info on lagoon setups?

It was a 65G AGA I shut down in August, after running 6 years. Circulation was with an Iwaki 40RLT returned to either a left or right tank-side nozzle that I selected with a valve. I used a skimmer on and off but main nutrient control was using a veg filter where I exported turf algae. Single...

    any info on lagoon setups?

Ok, I'm gonna try to attach some picture thingies of my lagoonal setup. The grass here is Halodule, or Shoal grass. The Halimeda in the foreground is H. opuntia, or brittle Halimeda. In the background there is a little bit of Star grass. I got shoal grass, manatee grass, and tutle grass from...

    any info on lagoon setups?

I kept a 65G lagoonal until August this year (6 years running). I kept stony coral, arborescent gorgonians, clams, and zoos. Also 4 specie of seagrass - Turtle grass (failed - 3 months), Manatee grass, Star grass, and Shoal grass. Also sand-associated algae like Halimeda, Udotea, Penicilius...

    Heater ???

I cut both apart and a piece of the circuit was open and I didn't recognize it as any kind of fuse. It appeared to be a solder connection that came apart. I stopped water flow past the heater in both failures, so the heater did get hotter than it normally would be with the pump running, but it...

    Heater ???

I had the opposite luck with Finnex, two of the titanium heating elements failed (open, luckily) while the Finnex controller with mechanical relay has been accurate and bombproof. My next tank will use solid state relays to control a main and a redundant heating element via microcontroller with...

    Moving lighting system?

Dave, do you want to take a single pendant and walk it slowly across the tank over the course of the light cycle and then travel back after the light goes off? Or will it be more complicated than that? Hobby robotic components is how I was considering implementing a task like what I describe...

Help getting flange seal to seal

The test engineer in me demands some sort of test... 5 psi seems like a pretty low pressure. I've seen EDPM o-ring material at Harbor Freight for pretty cheap. But it comes in a set with no details if there is 1/8" material, or how long it is.

Help getting flange seal to seal

I built a Ca Rx and cant get the flange seal to seal. My test setup pressurizes the vessel to 5 psi. When I soap the perimeter of the flange, I'm getting bubbles in several places. Pipe diameter: 6" Flange: 9" o-ring groove diameter: 7 3/8" o-ring groove width: 1/8" o-ring groove depth: not...

    PFO's Solaris LED System; Tested

You guys are providing a lot of useful information and opinion, thanks for taking the time to post replies to this thread, as I'm currently flopping and twitching over a light setup for my next tank, which will be my first attempt at an open-top single-fixture tank. I tried to get a...

    Lighting Help Please

It sounds like one or more lamps may not have its pins in good contact with the socket contacts. I would check the orientation of the lamps in the sockets first. You can also use regular T12 lamps to check the function of the ballast and the sockets if you want to eliminate the possibility of...

    Reverse Osmosis & Deionization

When is a permeate pump most useful? Is it only meant for applications where there are frequent small loads on the membrane, or does it actually improve the performance of the membrane during extended loads? Thanks for your time in preparing this workshop and answering questions.

Peristaltic Feed Pump for Ca Reactor

Thanks for the help so far. A couple more questions: 1. What is the prefered tubing material and where do you source your tubing from? From masterflex it looks like silicone is ideal, but I'm thinking a softer tubing like surgical tubing would cause less wear on the pump and be OK for a...

Peristaltic Feed Pump for Ca Reactor

Reed, Thanks for the feedback. That is the kind of inputs I’m looking for. Is it common to use peristaltic pumps to feed calcium reactors? Most Ca reactors seem to let the recirc pump also pressurize the vessel and then have a fine adjustment valve to control the flow rate through the...

Peristaltic Feed Pump for Ca Reactor

Are there brands of peristaltic pumps that are known to be reliable for years of continuous duty (with tubing changes)? Thanks.

Revival of RUGF including NNR ! !

Paul, that what I remember seeing in the early 80's for SW fish tanks before the wet/dry became popular, sand RUGF with little spots where it was obvious that the water was channeling up. Boomer, I work with the sub fleet, there is submerged elec eqt made for far worse abuse than a SW fish tank...
