Finally doing it right from the begining :)

How do you keep the sand down on the bottom with a snapper as a closed loop pump on a 58G?

    Dimmer switch on HQI ballasts?

Based on my experience with this ballast driving a XM10K bulb, the voltage reduction affects the PAR output more than the color appearance. The reduced voltage should prolong the bulb life. I have played around with a Coralvue 250W ballast few years back and I can say it's not the optimum...

question on what size pump i need

I would go with a Quite one or a small Eheim, these last forever and are not big heat producers.

    Please Critique my Sump Design!

How big of a display tank is this sump for? Depending on the return pump size and flow thru of the skimmer, you might not need that many baffles at the skimmer chamber. Ditch the sponge for sure. What are you going to use to trap detritus as it come down the drain?

Anyone here ever use ring flashes/lights?

Please let us know how the ring light works out. Flash through glass is always hard for me, I end up seeing the reflection (none macro\close up) if the camera is not perfectly parallel to the glass.

    reef novice getting started

I think you should try to add all your sand and rocks at once, during it a little at a time just prolongs the cycling process and cause life (on the rocks and in sand) to die each time you have a spike in Ammonia. Go slow is for post cycling and stocking up the tank.. Having a prolong stinky...

    Bad emerald!

You think crabs (and fish) living in a tank like this will be hungry?

    Which Calcium Reactor is best

I have not used any Geo equipment, but based on their web spec I would go with the CR618 because the Eheim pump (lower power consumption and MUCH quieter than the Pan World). These reef equipment are getting expensive :(

    Which Calcium Reactor is best

I would get a ProCal by MTC if I had to buy an off the shelf CaRx for a 300 gallon full blown SPS tank (high Ca consumption). It is a well built piece of equipment and one of the initial developer of the recapture and re-inject Co2 concept. The only thing I don't like about it is the down flow...

    Which Calcium Reactor is best

Roscoe, bigger reactor means bigger recirculating pump = use more electricity to run. Changing\adding media one time more a year is easier and more cost effective IMO.

    Bad emerald!

I had that happen to me when I used them to control bubble algae too. They started off eating the smaller bubble algae, then moved on to picking at the flesh off te tips of my SPS corals. All the crabs became fresh food for my trigger.

    Koralith or ARM

What kind of CaRx are you using? That makes a difference on the media type.

    my new tank!!!

Nice tank and zoas collection.. Let me know when you are fragging them. How did the ballast work out for you?

    Vodka dosing

Carbon dosing will enhance the growth of the bacteria that consumes PO4 and No3 in the process. You need to have or add the bacteria in the tank to start with, it will multiply once sufficient amount of the food it needs are present in the tank. Just adding vodka without the bacteria strain will...

    Alternatives to Protein Skimmers

Hi Boomer, didn't have the pleasure of running into you at MACNA and use the secret code to verify membership .. I think Ken's presentation was great and I am not relying on the skimmer as main DOC export tool now, I upped my water change to 10% every two weeks. Ken's presentation on...

    SPS Tank Equipment Ideas

The take away message for me was the chart on page 22 of this article . Skimmers can only skim out "hydrophobic" DOC. GAC can trap any form of DOC and water changes take everything out.

Kevin, you didn't sit in on Ken Feldman's talk on effectiveness of skimmers?

    Acro predator?

AEFW can start eating from any where, it depends on the flow, lighting, and possibility the type of coral it is on. I have always seem them starting from the base to mid branch sections and underside of a colony. Dipping corals in iodine based solution have been reported to cure some types of...

    Acro predator?

Those pods maybe just cleaning up after someone else that ate the flesh. Try taking one the colony and dip/wash in some Coral Revive, look for some clear color flat warms (AEFW).
