Wow Ed, you're getting really good with that crappy old camera of yours...oh wait...:D

    Achilles Tang

http://www.seachem.com/products/product_pages/Cupramine.html From that link "Use 1 mL (top mark of enclosed dispenser) per 40 L (10.5 gallons*) the first day, wait 48 hours, then repeat for a total dose of 0.5 mg/L (in freshwater, use half dose). Leave at this concentration for 14 days. Do not...

    Achilles Tang

FWIW, the dose that Ed added was 1/2 the total dose that would bring the tank to .5ppm. Seachem recommends that 1/2 the dose be used on day one. He was, if the bottle is correct, somewhere around .2ppm. I would have to disagree with using fresh salt water for a QT. Using tank water should be...

    Alternative Reactor Media

Yes, up-flow is considered fluidized, you aren't compacting your media with the flow, you are keeping it in "fluid" or "suspended". With large particles, you aren't actually fluidizing the media but for hobby purposes we call this a fluidized bed reactor. In looking at the Schuran, it is...

Hey Ed, let me know what you find out here... I thought your reactor did up-flow? :?:

    Fuge Problems???

I have added 15 trochus snails between the two tanks and they are helping...just not fast enough for me. Of course you don't want to add anything in there that will destroy the fauna you are trying to protect but adding some snails, pods, worms etc may help.

    Fuge Problems???

As Ed knows (we've talked ;) ) I am having the same problem as he is. I am also running the lights of america bulb but I don't believe this is due to the spectrum because I have even MORE diatoms in my grow out tank that is lit by an XM10K. Both of these tanks are new acrylic 40 gallon tanks...

    Family Room Tank

If I were to guess then...the right side has the 10K and 20K and the left side has the 10K only?? Are you still running the VHOs?

    Family Room Tank

Looks good Ed. I see you got the fuge and spot for the QT in the garage shot. Is the shot from the front new?...with all 4 halides or just 3?

Reminder: Electricity & corals = BAD!!

Hopefully you don't mind my input. Just want to make sure you know that if a GFCI trips there is a problem and it might not hurt your tank, but it could kill you. Like I said, probably a pump case ground, and as long as the house ground stays intact, you will be fine. But if for some reason...

Reminder: Electricity & corals = BAD!!

I am right there with you. Just letting others know that a GFCI would work for this case. Mine blew all of the time as well...leaving me without the return pump for however long it was while I was at work... I took them back out and am also without GFCI. But what that is telling us is that...

Reminder: Electricity & corals = BAD!!

A GFCI would have tripped instantly when current went through the tank and not the sea swirl. You may want to consider replacing the tanks breaker with a GFCI breaker. The draw back is that the GFCI would trip on any future fault and your tank would go without power until you corrected the...

    Best MH Bulb

Ed hit the nail on the head. Personal preference. In the past year I have gone from XM10K to 20K back to 10K, then to 15K back to 10K and now I am trying Hamilton 14K bulbs. XM 10K bulbs are a VERY bright crisp white. Some say a little yellow. I believe a lot of that is dependant on what is...

    Lite Rail system...

They run 2x 400W over 16 square feet. I thought the ideal lighting implemented one MH bulb over 4 square feet...basically a 2'x2' area. I really like the idea of moving the bulb but I personally think 4' is too short. Think of the "ideal" placement for a mh bulb on a 4'x2' tank. It would be...

    Lite Rail system...

It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on how this will save energy. I think it would be cool and may be beneficial to the corals (I believe I have read about aquafarms using a system like this). I believe you've said you are doing a 4'x4' tank. So instead of doing something like...

    Fraging

Be careful, Xenia will take over the tank. Ironically a lot of people frag it to get more...about 6 months later they are fragging it to get less.:D Xenia can be cut, or it peels real well too...it is stringy like celery. You can take a stalk, peel it down to the base, or wherever it comes...

    Let's Talk About ~Algae Control~

The problem is I was a noob when the tank was set up...I only refered to RC and didn't get all the info needed from the "right" sources. To answer your questions. Tank has been up about 18 - 20 months. Sand bed is silicate sand blasting sand (I was told by Ron and others that would be no...

    Photos under 20K XM's

What type of camera are you using? Go to this web site and download the exif reader program. Load up the picture and get more information that you ever wanted to know. http://www.takenet.or.jp/%7Eryuuji/minisoft/exifread/english/ I used 20K XM bulbs for a while...maybe not long enough to let...

    Let's Talk About ~Algae Control~

:D You know I only get time for forums while I am at work Ed. I wish I could just run home and take a picture now...maybe when I win the lottery and get to quit this job. :D Scooterman, I agree when it is on the rock, but it adheres to the sand and I seem to pull up a chunk of sand every time...

    Let's Talk About ~Algae Control~

Mike, I do have a sump and fuge. This is really unsettling because a DSB was "sold" to me as somewhere that would harbor anerobic bacteria that would keep me nitrate free. I am pretty upset about this because pulling a DSB isn't like changing lights. Now if this boils down to more...
