Safe Rate of Temp Increase After Power Failure?

Do you guys know what's a good rate of increase for temperature when power is restored after a power outage? The thunderstorm that ripped through the area last night caused an 8.5 hour long power outage in my neighborhood. My tank's temp had dropped to 71 degrees by the time the power was...

    J-Ranko's 15 Gallon Rimless Nano

The thunderstorm that ripped through the area last night knocked out my power for 8.5 hours! I had the tank covered in blankets and used my car's battery to run a powerhead and a heater. My tank's temp still fell to 71 degrees by the time the power was restored. I barely had any sleep, but...

    Brie's 34gal Solana

Sorry to hear about your tank crashing. I had a similar disaster when I left for college years ago. I left my old tank in the care of my parents and they weren't exactly as into it as I was, nor as knowledgeable, to say the least. So you can imagine what the tank looked like when I came back...

Well look what we have here.

Awesome set-up, man! You have some really nice zoas. I've been looking around at local stores in the area for some nice zoas and I haven't seen anything like yours! (Maybe cuz you snapped them all up? ) How's this tank coming along?

    J-Ranko's 15 Gallon Rimless Nano

Thank you! Thanks! No, the overflow does not self-start. It has to be manually primed. However, once it's primed it maintains its siphon even through a power outage. The actual MAME overflow has a venturi fitting on the return line that primes and maintains the siphon in the overflow line...

    thatguys 120g build.

Don't listen to them, Thatguy559! The tank's center brace is blocking the new Plasma Arc light fixture. It's obvious which one's gotta go---the tank, of course! Don't you see that he now has an excuse to upgrade to a brand new rimless braceless tank!? ;) In all seriousness, this is an...

Brie's Macro Photo of the Day thread

These macro photos are amazing! I'm surprised you get such sharp macro shots with those slow shutter speeds. Are you sure you don't use a tripod with remote shutter release? ;)

    total noob to SW

Thanks for verifying. I'm surprised it's reading 0 given it's only RO. The source water is probably close to pure to begin with.

Here's a few shots with better views of the corals: Right Side Left Side Top View of "Acro Summit" I'll try to get some decent close-up shots. I do have some macro shots of my corals, but they're from months ago before the move to the current 15 gallon.

    J-Ranko's 15 Gallon Rimless Nano

It's not very clean at the moment, but here's a couple of shots of the sump I took today: As you can see, it's a maze of tubes. You might be able to discern a skimmer, a heater, a phosban reactor (with carbon), and a dual float switch. The sump is just a 5.5 gallon AGA tank with a couple...

    J-Ranko's 15 Gallon Rimless Nano

Here's a series of shots showing the progress of my system from cycle to present: MARCH (cycle) I tried several scape concepts while the tank was cycling. I finally settled on this: APRIL (initial stocking phase) In April, I started stocking my tank. First I put a clownfish and a...

    J-Ranko's 15 Gallon Rimless Nano

My overflow is a siphon type overflow based off of the MAME overflow design, which combines the overflow and return lines into one unit. Here's a pic of the actual MAME glass overflow: FRONT BACK I wanted to buy this for my overflow. But it's expensive and it's sold out even in Japan...

The best water for your tank is RO/DI or distilled. Few stores besides a LFS sell RO/DI water. Most stores sell only RO water. But RO water is still way better than tap water. In terms of purity: Distilled > RO/DI > RO > tap If RO/DI or distilled is not practical or within your budget...

setting up a 7 gallon bow front-ideas welcome!

An Aquaclear with a large bag of GAC replaced weekly, along with weekly water changes (should be easy considering the volume), will be more than sufficient for your filtration. A skimmer would not be very helpful for something this small. GAC will be far more effective, and with this small...

Time for new lights, recommendation please.

I love the Phoenix myself, but I hear it can be very blue depending on the ballast--even bluer than the Radium 20,000K. My shines a strong white with a good amount of blue, but nothing like the "windex" look that some people complain about.

    Refractometer Suggestions?

This might come in handy when selecting a refractometer to buy. According to Boomer, the few true seawater refractometers available are: Hand-Held The Vee-Gee refract sold by The Filter Guys, the Vital Sine from Foster & Smith, ATAGO, and D-D Digital Misco (famous for its Digital seawater...
