    Colossal Calamari Anymone???

I saw that on Discovery the other night... not a real good program to watch before hitting bed! Kinda makes a mantis shrimp look like a poodle, huh?

    fish are dieing

In addition to what they said, actual numbers on the water parameters would help too. Many times, it seems that people's definition of "great" or "perfect" water are very different!

Is this kind of water ok?

I don't even like to eat the food from Safeway, let alone use their water! But seriously... what you're describing is better than tap, but don't fool yourself that you're getting "pure" water. They put "stuff" back in to make it taste good. Bottled water for drinking is anything but pure. The...

    Alternatives to anemons for clown

Just be aware that whatever coral you get, the clown may or may not decide to make it "home". It's hit and miss. I've had an O.Clown in my tank from day 1 and it couldn't have cared less about my torch, or bubble, or mushrooms, or anthelia... It actually killed my bubble by constantly flicking...

    Gobie Problem

My guess is that your Hawkfish is really appreciative of you right now and smirks every time you add another goby.

    cycling with established tank water.

Listen to this dude... existing water doesn't do squat. Now if you use fully cured live rock, or rock from an existing tank, you can use just about any type of water you want (used or new) and probably skip the cycle or at least have a minimal one. But I always like to "test the waters" by...

    Brown stuff on the sand

Watch the ammonia... it should be 0. But I'm guessing you're showing a trace because you moved around the sand bed. Don't be surprised if the diatoms show up tomorrow again. Moving around the top layer of sand just puts them off for a little while. But I think you're on the right track... as...

    Open Brain

Can't really tell from the blurry picture what I'm looking at. Is it tissue recession? Is the tissue actually coming off from the septa? Or is the edge of the live tissue down lower, below where the white stuff is coming from? Just trying to get some more info and maybe it'll ring a bell with...

Anyone been stung by a frogspawn?

Oh my... I guess getting a little welt from a coral isn't really a bad thing in the whole big picture of things! Just FYI, thefilterguys sell a shoulder-length disposable - but not as "industrial grade" as the equine version appear to be: http://www.thefilterguys.biz/reef_sleeves.htm

Anyone been stung by a frogspawn?

I'm like you Jan... I wear rubber gloves 90% (not 99%!) of the time. But I've gotten nailed a couple times by a torch and it does produce an odd sensation that takes a while to go away. No welts on me, but as previously mentioned, reactions vary from person to person. And just another point...

    bristleworm in the refugium??????????

Even if it gets into your main tank, in my opinion, it's still ok for it to be there.

    Better Water for FOWLR

Sorry... I was just being facetious since you'd "busted" the usefulness of live rock.

    Better Water for FOWLR

Suppose the answer depends on if you have live rock. ;)

    what are these?

Brown thing looks like some type of feather duster. If it is, then it's a good thing. The white thing in all your pictures is aiptasia. Bad thing. Do NOT scrape it off or mechanically remove it as all the little bits will settle elsewhere and make new ones. Either get some "Joe's Juice" and...

Question about live sand and rock.

No. When exposed to air for a while, the coralline may turn white, but you'll still have it on the rock to seed the rest of your tank. If you have no rocks in the tank with coralline on them, then you won't have coralline. It has to come from somewhere.

    Website WYSIWYG Update

I'm using Firefox (V2.0.0.16) on a Vista (SP0) machine. No issues. And you're right... the colors are at least as good, or better, in person!

    plague of mushrooms

Kinda what I figured reeferdude. If nothing else, it'd be a temporary pruning job. Thanks for the idea mseepman (and welcome aboard!) - I knew they'd release over time but didn't realize they'd do it so quick. The one or two that are "playing out of bounds" are pretty close to the rest, so...

    plague of mushrooms

Bump... I don't have tons of 'shrooms, but a couple are starting to wander away from where I want them. I know injecting them with kalk slurry will do the job, but what would happen if I just cut them with an exacto right at the base above the "foot"? Would it just grow back?

How long do cleaner shrimp live?

Coming up on 2 years for my scarlet cleaner. No idea though on a normal life span.

Newbie mistakes corrective game plan !

I think herefishyfishy has said it all pretty well, although it's probably not what you want to hear. Regarding the diatoms, that's the normal part of any tank cycling and I don't think it has anything to do with lack of circulation. It doesn't help... but it didn't cause it either. Not sure...
