    Thoughts About LED Lighting

I agree about the cost,, this is actually one of the least expensive units I could find that would work with a 36' long tank. I like the Raidon, but it looks like I would have to buy two to account for the 36" length: Ecotech Radion XR30W : REEFKOI CORALS, SPS, LPS, Zoanthids. They also have an...

    Thoughts About LED Lighting

I'm looking at finally upgrading my lighting system from pc's to an led system. I have a 36" wide tank and was looking at this Orphek that came out recently. Any thoughts? http://orphek.com/led/2012/02/orphek-nilus/ Thanks, Lee

    EMERGENCY- Tank just crashed....

Had something like this happen to me this fall. I slacked off on my water changes doing large changes every 3 weeks instead of weekly. My skimmer went out and since I was focusing on college and not the tank i didn't notice for a few days. Lost all my corals except ironically for the pulsing...

    Red Hair Algae

I was going to vodka dose, then realized I had little to no vodka but bags of sugar. Cheaper and I didn't have to run to the liquor store. The sugar dosing seems to be working really well. I have to clean and test today so I'll see where my nitrates and phosphates are. I started with 1/4 tsp...

    Josiah - 0; Damsel - 1

I'd second the 2 liter coke bottle method, it worked well for me when I needed to catch an aggressive wrasse.

    Red Hair Algae

Me too. That algae I had was such a deep red, actually looked really nice until it started taking over everything. Unfortunately, it looks like it choked out a lot of my coraline. Most areas where there was heavy red algae are now bleach white. Could be because of the higher Ca levels, but...

    Red Hair Algae

So I've got the algae on the run. I reduced my feeding amount, upped my salinity, increased my Ca & Mg, and started adding sugar as a source of organic carbon. I kept the 10,000k light off for about a week and went through all my equipment and removed any type of media filter. I had two in...

    Red Hair Algae

Think I should remove the canister filter completely? I don't really need it, I was mainly using it to run carbon. I could take everything out except the carbon or just remove it from the system. Thoughts?

    Red Hair Algae

you know, now that you mention it, i do run a eheim canister filter with activated carbon. the bottom third is filled with round lava rock pebbles. I put the carbon packet on top of the pebbles and there is a media sponge that i put on to of that. I clean it and change out the carbon every...

    Red Hair Algae

So I did a lot of blowing and syphoning the algae with a water change today and what do you know, I found three little survivor soft corals. They are a bit small for me to identify but it'll be fun trying to nurse them back.

    Red Hair Algae

I have always had testable nitrates that hover at 20 ppm, but I my nitrate test is a bit older and API, not sure exactly how accurate they are. My nitrates didn't even drop below 20ppm when I added the skimmer.

    Red Hair Algae

Hey all, have had a decent infestation of red hair algae for the past month. At first, I thought it was coralline because the color was deep red and until recently didn't have a hair like appearance. Did the gambit of tests and figured its coming from several sources: 1) My water changes were...

Reef Octopus NWB 110 skimmer pump out. Replacement ideas?

Thats what I thought, but I thought I'd check to see. Should have listened to you a few months ago and gone with the SWC. Live and learn I guess.

Reef Octopus NWB 110 skimmer pump out. Replacement ideas?

Just stopped out of the blue. I took it all apart and got it running again, but its a little finicky. I had to take off one of the bushings that go into the back plate. It seemed like it was binding it up. Ill check the change water tomorrow and see if that is where the problem is. The die...

Reef Octopus NWB 110 skimmer pump out. Replacement ideas?

My skimmer pump went out on my Reef Octopus and I need a replacement. Anyone know if upgrading to a bigger pump will cause any issues? the pump that went out is the otp 1000 pinwheel (250GPH), and I found an otp 2000 (500GPH)and otp 3000 (750 GPH) that look like they will swap out no...

    Probably Shouldn't Have Done This.............

Thanks for all the kind words. Sorry for the late response, been out for a while. I won't give up on the mandi's, it'll probably be easier if I start out with a healthy one.

Well, the little guy died this morning. Oh well, it was worth a try and a great leading experience along the way.
