    So I'm having some issues

Water flow- I'm guessing I have around 200+gph. I have a mag 3 as a return but its cranked down a bit. I also have a powerhead doing about 50gph. So, water is definitely not stagnant. Lighting IMO power compacts get a bad rap. I'd have t5's but they don't make bulbs small enough for a 10 gal...

    So I'm having some issues

I'm using power compacts, which I know most would not think to be sufficient for any sort of SPS. The tank is a 10 gal, so its very shallow. I've kept certain sps (mostly less light demanding ones) very well. Even if I lost color in a coral it would at least grow and polyps would extend. Oh, and...

    So I'm having some issues

Well, they all started "around" the same time. The first big blow was the auto-topoff thing with a sudden drop in salinity. That in itself is enough to cause some issues. But when some ricordia mushrooms and zooanthids can't hold onto their color at the bottom of a 10 gal tank where they were...

    So I'm having some issues

Ok, despite my best investigative efforts, I'm currently baffled at whats up with my tank. I'll first give some of my tank specs 10gal with 10 gal sump/refugium pH 8.3 calcium 375ppm dkH 9.6 salinity 33ppt Nitrate 0-undetectable w/ salifert phosphates - low or 0 a few weeks back...

    Stereonepthya

Just thought I'd ask. Do you guys have any way of getting your hands on any stereonepthya sp (not the azoox sclero or dendronepthiids). I know liveaquaria carries them but thought I'd see. Here is a link to them at liveaquaria...

    PSAS frag swap new additions

I use a canon 350 d (rebet xt) and the ef-s 60mm f2.8 macro lens. I will be upgrading to the 40d in a month though. I absolutely love the lens. Fast to focus and incredibly sharp.

    PSAS frag swap new additions

Here are a couple photos of some of the frags I got yesterday at the PSAS frag swap. A. tenuis from Tracy Turbinaria From Fragman M. digitata and I can't remember the guy's name I got this from A ricordia I got from barrier reef recently- you can barely see a new mouth growing to the left...

    PSAS event - Frag Swap - September 20th 2008

Well, I think I'll try and attend. I've been in the area for a long time but never seemed to attend any PSAS events. I'll be glad to meet you all on Sat. Aaron

Caring for my big sponge tree

To be honest, there's not a whole lot you can do to make it survive long term. It doesn't photosynthesize at all, so you can put it in as little light as you like. You can spot feed it phytoplankton but to be honest a sponge cannot feed fast enough to benefit from spot feedings in the long run...

    Corals fading...trace elements?

One thing I hadn't thought of before now was phosphates. I take for granted that I have a refugium which on past tanks has led to little to no algae growth and untraceable nitrates and phosphates. Currently I have a little bit of black algae (probably cyano) that grows in addition to the normal...

    Corals fading...trace elements?

I do a 1-1.5gal water change every week or so. This is probably a little over 5% total water volume of the system, so I should be good. Again, I was thinking I was ok on trace elements, especially in a small system such as mine, but I was just checking everyone's thoughts. Thanks again for the...

    Corals fading...trace elements?

Good to know. I'm dosing a 2 part system (similar to C-balance) which has trace elements and whatnot in it, so I should be ok there. My tank is a 10gal with a 10gal sump/refugium. Is it possible for a tank this small constant carbon usage could reduce trace elements a significant amount? This...

    Corals fading...trace elements?

Hmmm... I'm just trying to find the missing factor here. I've kept SPS corals in a nano before with little to no issues. I'm just running into some situations I haven't had before and trying to see what is out of wack. As I'm not testing for trace elements and everything else seems ok, I was...

    Corals fading...trace elements?

Hi everyone, I've had my tank setup for about 4 months now with corals in it for about 2. Anyhow, my corals have faded a bit which I thought was due to a bad temp and salinity swing a month or so back. The only thing is they haven't really been recovering their color. Here are the tanks specs...

    Seachem reef adv. calcium drip....alkalinity?

Well I finally got my auto-topoff setup. I tried adding 10g of baking soda (5 parts bs to 1 part bbs)to 2.5 gallons of ro , which from what I could tell had a pH of around 8.6 (possibly higher, salifert only goes to 8.6) and a DkH of over 16. This much water will usually last me around 5 days to...

    Red bug interceptor dip?

Thanks, I'm going to be looking this week for it. I'll be sure to let you know.

    Red bug interceptor dip?

Thanks for all the replies. I think the dip is the best bet for me right now. The pieces have only been in there for 5 days and I'm hoping that they haven't spread too much. With that said, I have only 3 acros (rest are either lps, monties, or porites) one of which is an A. millepora which from...

    Red bug interceptor dip?

I got a couple of Acropora sp. corals from a fellow reefer and one ended up having some red bugs. These corals are both still easy to remove from the tank. I imagine that if one has the bugs, then its likely the other has them as well. I am hoping to try and do an interceptor dip on them and was...

    Seachem reef adv. calcium drip....alkalinity?

Oh, and I also was wondering if you'd recommend dripping this at night only? or do you think the pH is low enough to add it as topoff is needed? Thanks again Aaron

    Seachem reef adv. calcium drip....alkalinity?

Thanks boomer for the response. That definitely helps. I know I can figure this out from trial and error, but how much baking soda mix would you recommend start with diluting in say...a gallon of ro? I know I'll have to fine tune this, I was just wondering if you had an idea? Thanks Aaron
