Help Please -- Ca Rx Stopped Dripping Effluent

i would suggest restricting the feed going into the reactor rather than the effluent line... the effleunt is loaded with ca and dkh and will stop up a restricted tube faster than a wide open one... it definately sounds like your effluent tube is stopped up, probably at the valve restricting the flow

    Millipede like thing

most likely a bristleworm... good scavengers and detritivores... was it reddish in color?

    Aquarium Bill

could also be good for the hobby by making people stop and think about putting a (very expensive rather than relatively inexpensive) fish into an inappropriate environment before buying... too many people, it seems, see fish as expendable/replaceable :(

    Feather Calupera in display

limit your p04 and you will starve the algae.... do this slooooooowly if you decide to use gfo as you can bleach your corals before starving the algae of p04...... theres also vodka dosing which bolsters bacteria populations which feed off of p04 thus limiting its availability in the solution...

the good the bad and the ugly of power compacts

    46bow is a 36" tank :)

    Light penetration

what bulbs/ballast/reflectors are you using? what sps are you trying to keep? different species require more or less light.....

the good the bad and the ugly of power compacts

agree on the t5s... do you hve a canopy or are you looking for a "hood" with legs etc? if you have a canopy, i would suggest a t5 retrofit from hellolights.com or another site of your choosing... be sure if you get t5 to get good individual reflectors... 2x39w should be enough and later on when...

    Is this an anenome?

theyre good for natural filtration if you can contain them to your overflows and sump/fuge too :)

    LifeReef Calcium reactor

the mixing pump draws water from the bottom of the chamber and pumps it back into the top of the chamber... a more efficient design is to circulate the other way around...

    LifeReef Calcium reactor

i have one... i swapped out the mag pump for an eheim 1048... fwiw, life reef resctors circulate from the top down rather than bottom up which is less efficient and can allow excess co2 to build up at the top... just keep an eye on it and you should be fine... ive neverhad that problem though...

    Calcium Reactor Media

i use the koralith 6-10mm media in my lifereef reactor with an eheim 1048 stir pump... so far im a big fan of this media... i prefer larger media since there is less chance of it becoming sludge and clogging the reactor if maintained properly...

    Starting a Nano Type Tank

i hate to say this and hope you dont take it the wrong way, but if you intend to keep any kind of corals, you wasted your money... check out ahsupply.com or hellolights.com and look into a 65wx2 pc retrofit kit with 50/50 bulbs or a 70 or 150w mh retro kit.... a standard flourescent strip light...

    Tang

anthias, assessors, dottybacks, chromis, and some wrasses... these fish all stay relatively small and add great color and movement to a tank

    Tang

i would have to agree with the above... imo even a 75g is too small for most tangs... if you are set on having one a yellow is your best bet.... ive kept tangs in my 120 but feel that isnt even big enough long term... i currently have a naso (that was given to me) and love it but am looking for...

if you ever need to find any a home and dont mind shipping to the east coast let me know ;)

    Water quality questions

one other thing to consider since this is a new tank... new sand will take time to become colonized with bacteria... this bacteria actually helps hold the sand particles together... also, it can take some time for the water movement in the tank to move the sand around to where it will settle...

The danger of false security - please advise

your Mg level is a little low along with an unbalanced Ca-dKH ratio... i believe that may be contributing to your algae issues... try bumping it up a little and getting your calcium and alk levels in line with one another... a good couple of water changes using a good salt mix, buffered and...

    Sump issues

tha main thing is keeping bubbles out of the return area... the skimmer shouldnt care about bubbles really and depending on the skimmer it might let out some bubbles anyway... just put a bubble trap before the return pump

    Starting a Nano Type Tank

if it were my tank i would skip the hob filter... stick a maxijet12000 or 2 in there and a 100w heater... for lighting, it sounds like you are new to this so will probably be keeping soft corals for a while so i would recommend 2x65w power compacts for lighting... any soft corals and most lps...

    Sand critters

what is the desired function of the sand bed? how deep are you planning the sand to be? a healthy sand bed needs a wide diversity of worms, chitons, pods, etc which a sand sifting star will deplete... nassarius snails will definately climb the walls but will not climb out... sand sifting gobies...
