    Tank stand (woodworking)

I was surprised at how nice ash is to work with. I just built an open stairway with 12/4 ash treads. The beams on either side are doug fir. Nice bat! I look forward to seeing what you have in mind for this...

    Tank stand (woodworking)

We would expect nothing less! Looks like a nice project. Those Lucas sawmills are fairly impressive with what they can do for a small rig. My father-in-law has been running one for the last year or so. Before that he ran one of the last big blades in Washington (literally something like a 4...

    Spindle weed invasion!!!!

Hmm, it's kind of neat looking. I imagine if it wasn't taking over the tank it would look nice as part of the normal mix. Josh

    New Red Bug Treatment?

If anyone is to try this, don't use a cigarette. Find pure tobacco. Cigarettes have a lot of other nasty crap as additives. Josh

Pic of the 6.6gal nano with new rock...

Nice little nano! I'm going to be starting a nano in about 4 months, so I like seeing how they progress. Keep up the good work and take lots of pictures (and post them here of course!) Josh

Where to buy base rock in WA

Yes, that's true. I've actually found haitian live rock for around $3/lb. I'm looking more for dead rock, or mined rock that wouldn't need to be shipped and could be bought in the 300-400 pound range. Thanks! Josh

Where to buy base rock in WA

As part of the research into starting a tank again someday, I'm looking at the option of starting the tank with mostly base rock with some live rock and live sand to seed it. I like the idea of not pulling rock out of the ocean, just as I want to focus on aquacultured and fragged corals and...

    CNC for acrylic projects

That makes sense, but it certainly changes the equation doesn't it! At $500-600 this seemed like a good addition to a shop, but with the software kicking it up over $2000 that's another story. Oh well, I like the idea of buying flanges locally anyway so that's fine. I just liked the idea of...

    CNC for acrylic projects

 I don't have a CAD background, but aren't there cheaper CAD programs that would do the job? It certainly makes the idea of a template library more tempting. Also, once a part has been drawn up, how hard are they to modify? For instance, once someone has drawn a keyhole flange, how...

    CNC for acrylic projects

That's great Don! It will be great to have more high-end DIY options in the not-so-distant future. I was also wondering if you would do a cost tally on the project "as-built." I remember at the beginning of the thread it was projected to be around $400-500, but you beefed up a few things and...

    CNC for acrylic projects

Those look great Don! Your other pseudo-twist-lock flange looks interesting also. It would be good to see how well it works in acrylic on the real deal. How tight could you make it before you exceeded the structural integrity of those threads? Just FYI, I'm asking this out of complete and...

    Ro waste valve making noise

Do you have a permeate pump on your set-up? My set-up from air-water-ice has a little canister on top that uses the water supply pressure to help assist the post-filter water flow. It improves efficiency, but it's very loud. If you know for sure it's a solenoid, then never mind, but it's...

    CNC for acrylic projects

dust collection Hey Don, looking great! I'm highly motivated to build one of these (after I finish the house, build the garage, build the shop, etc.) I noticed that your controller is mounted up by what looks like a dust collection duct. This made me think; how are you hooking this thing up...

    good plumbers

If I was closer (and not insanely busy building my own house) I'd offer to come up and install a new one for you. I installed a tankless gas heater to heat the hydronic flooring in our new house which works great. We'll have a separate tankless to heat the water for fixtures and appliances. I...

    CNC for acrylic projects

Don; will the software be able to control the variable speed trimmer? If so, are you just opening up the case and splicing into the terminals for the speed control? Or, will you just adjust the speed control manually before starting a run? Josh

    CNC for acrylic projects

 Just kidding! I am almost done building my new house with no construction background. I did darn near everything except hang the drywall and pour the slab. I did all of the foundation work, electrical, water, gas, sewer, framing, siding, roofing etc., and all of it I...

    CNC for acrylic projects

This is awesome! I'd always just assumed that CNC was WAY out of my league in terms of DIY, but it looks pretty doable... Don, thanks so much for first of all doing this, and then documenting it so we can see how it works. I have absolutely no useful CAD skills, but really like the idea of a...

    Alternative Reactor Media

possible mod? I don't know how well this would work or not, but I had a little brainstorm on this one. For people running both Kalk and a calcium reactor, I always hear people trying to get rid of the excess CO2. Couldn't you simply run the output from the calcium reactor into the Kalk...

Hmmm anyone want to talk about this one?? AGAIN

Oh... perhaps it's been said already, but even if done really really well, it would only provide one piece of evidence in a much larger puzzle. To try to derive a boolean yes/no answer on DSB versus bare bottom looking at mortality with depth seems like a gross over-simplification. I do...
