    water quailty is bad

Machine, I have a tank roughly the same age as yours (25G) and had similar problems with nitrates, but not the ammonia, despite several water changes. some hair algae but mostly cyanobacteria. I was able to get things under control with 3 changes to the tank. 1. got a reef octopus skimmer with a...

What is the best tank for a pico setup?

I just realized the link to the first picture did not work very well and I have reposted it here I have also added sand, rock and water here

What is the best tank for a pico setup?

Chelseagrin, you are right! I am going to have to revise my opinion on lighting. I suppose I meant that the lighting should not seem so mundane on a rimless tank. In this sense wooden canopies and hardware store chain do not appeal to me.

1st Build - New to the game!

while most fish can handle nitrate up to 100, most corals seem to be ok with less than 20 but the lower the better. more than 20 and my corals all close up. It might be time for a water change but I keep a bottle of Prime around for trouble spots. I have mostly LPS and softies and they like to...

What is the best tank for a pico setup?

ok, I got the fixture made, painted, and installed with the lights! next I need to add water and do some aquascaping. https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/110820434698971013088/albums/5678039978273507393/5677934094534071682

What is the best tank for a pico setup?

But I want to hide the lighting! The setting I have in mind for the rimless tank is one of clean contained beauty. I want as little as possible of the machinery that goes into a tank to show. I like the idea of a micro reef spontaneously appearing on my desk almost removed from reality. I want...

What is the best tank for a pico setup?

OK, agreed that a canopy would ruin the rimless look. So I got the 12X12X12 rimless starphire tank with 2 white/blue panorama strips. a mini koralia 425gph and a small heater. I will post some pics when I get the light fixture built.

What is the best tank for a pico setup?

this is something i have trouble understanding with aquarists is that i see a huge investment for lots of pretty fish and then they have it sitting on a pile of 2x4s with an ugly contraption on top. I think this is why i like the all in one tanks because they neatly solve these aesthetic...

What is the best tank for a pico setup?

I am thinking the Ecoxotic lights meant for the eco pico. i can add on, so i am thinking 3 strips. my main issue with all the others is how to mount them on a 12 in cube.

What is the best tank for a pico setup?

I have seen those at the LFS and I am not impressed with the color. everything looks dull and washed out. maybe more blue spectrum? maybe other brands differ. the ones I saw were EcoRay

What is the best tank for a pico setup?

hmm, finding adequate lighting for a good price will be the trick. but the starfire cubes do sound really good....

What is the best tank for a pico setup?

I have been looking at many of the small bio cubes, the Ecopico, and others as well as building my own. Now, I might be starting an opinion war here, but what is the best way to go for a tank under 10 gallons (no sump!) lets also assume I would like to avoid extensively modifying an out of the...

Using Carbon in a Mesh Bag, Helpful?

then I stand corrected. I mostly use the rotation method so i don't have to change it as often and it keeps my water clear.

Using Carbon in a Mesh Bag, Helpful?

the carbon can soak up iodine and some other useful trace elements. i find putting the mesh bag with carbon in the skimmer for a day or so every week works well to keep the water clear.

    What is considered "mature"?

i was thinking about a mandarin a while back and I came across this blog of a guy trying to get over the feeding issue. in the end he had luck with fish roe. Caring for a Mandarin Goby

No, this is a reef octopus BH100 with a surface skimmer attachment. and no, no bubbles are making it into the chamber. they are just in the water being pumped in. they do not rise above the water surface unless i adjust the collection box all the way down. then they only go halfway up the tube.

My username should have been Cpt. Blunders

as the tank has been running for 3 months, shouldn't there already be nutrients in the tank? there is dome brown stuff in the unit, its just not producing bubbles large enough to rise into the catch cup. i have tried adjusting the cup up and down (not a variable air flow type). i suppose it is...
