    Skimmer pole

Well, keep the folks posted. I would imagine though if this pans out, that maybe Precision Marine is about to hit the jackpot b/c they are probably the only major skimmer maker out there that's still got air driven CC units.

    Skimmer pole

Uhm, currently using a Deltec AP702, which is the best overall skimmer I've ever used. I've tried pretty much everything in the past. I must admit on the airstone note that I once had a 6"x48" quad airstone unit driven by a tetra luft or 2 (can't remember if I used both, but I know I had two)...

    How much PAR is enough?

Well it's all in interpretation. If you get your 20k bulb and understand that it's gonna be pretty much a white bulb, not blue after a few months and you're ok with that, then I guess it isn't a bulb stability issue. Ditto the 10k and it being yellow instead of white. I guess the thing that...

    How much PAR is enough?

color stability of the bulb, not the animals. 10k looks 5kish after a few months 20k looks 10kish after a few months. They were on BIG tanks.

    How much PAR is enough?

Dana Riddle has done work on this. There is a point of photoinhibition and a point of no added benefit. I can't remember where the link is. As I recall, photoinhibition really can't be acheived with aquarium lighting, but no added benefit can be acheived. I've seen several 400w DE setups...

    o2manyfish - Skimmer Comparison

Dave, you GOTTA clean out the MRC so we can see where the water level is....

    o2manyfish - Skimmer Comparison

The skimmers and Dave's system are gonna wash away! This is a friggin' amazing amount of rain for L.A. I don't think it's rained like this since like '78....

    o2manyfish - Skimmer Comparison

Hey anyone checked the webcam lately? It looks like Dave got the MR3 on line b/c the entire neck and cup is filled with nasty looking stuff....

Going to LA - Any suggestions for good LFS?

Uhm, IF you're into sps, then try and arrange a visit to Dave Botwin's place in the valley (o2manyfish). Around Marina Del Rey there ain't squat, you're gonna have to drive. Tong's in OC is good for looking, not for buying. This is a direct quote from Todd March on RC on places to go to...

Going to LA - Any suggestions for good LFS?

What part of LA....depending on where you are...your options change. Some places are really not all that close to one another.

    o2manyfish - Skimmer Comparison

Yeah, but c'mon, needlewheels, in general, are pretty friggin' simple to setup. Interestingly, the AquaC 400 ran really, really well, as does the ETSS in Dave's system, and those are skimmers that are general felt to be "difficult" to tune, which is like I said, interesting.

    Skimming conversation

You try making a skimmer that works as well as a Deltec. It ain't easy. The pumps are pricey. The body/neck ratios matter. They use very, very nice (overkill) fittings. Now granted, the materials cost is NOT anywhere near what they charge, but frankly the thing works really, really well, is...

    o2manyfish - Skimmer Comparison

The GEO custom of mine (which I think wasn't "tuned" b/c I KNOW it'll do better than it did in Dave's comparo) and a skimmer that was homemade and didn't work.

    o2manyfish - Skimmer Comparison

Dave you gotta open up the gate valve on the MR3. That's WAY too high for the water column.

    o2manyfish - Skimmer Comparison

Bernie, it's really not about "winning" as looking at functionality and plusses and minuses. Also, it's by no means "controlled", so...anyhoo, in the first batch, the AquaC "won". In this run, the MR3 isn't even running so....

    beckett skimmer what is it?

extremely controversial that issue. IMO, yes, a beckett is better at injecting air that the standard downdraft system. That being said, there are downdraft fans that swear by the things.

    beckett skimmer what is it?

I wouldn't necessarily call them modified downdrafts. Realistically they are just skimmers that use "beckett" nozzles as you have shown vs, standard venturis or spray induction (AquaC). On the market currently, there are four basic designs. Becketts, aspirating needlewheels, standard venturis...

    Skimming conversation

It terms of "do I have enough skimmer", it's a subjective question. Objectively if your system is healthy (fish fat and happy, corals growing with good color etc...) then beyond that I have very little else objective data for someone to reliably use. That being said, I am a believer in heavy...
