    Pinched Mantle

Point taken, Minh. I've been 'reefing for more than 13 years and have kept clams for most of that period of time. I can assure you that my water conditions and lighting are quite acceptable for an sps tank. To be sure, i'd not heard of PMD before and my clams have rarely, if ever, displayed...

    Pinched Mantle

For the past 3 weeks, my 3 squamosa clams have been closed and the exposed mantles have displayed the "pinched mantle" syndrome. I thought that there might be some imbalance in the water or the nipping by the big blue tang was the cause of the pinched mantles. That is until I chanced across this...

    Recirc octopus 200 8"x29"

Brad, you're going to love this skimmer! Best bang for buck! One thing, there's too many peeps trying to mod these into super-skimmers. IMO, just leave them as they are. Now, here's mine from brand new to 1 week ... see what I mean, stock standard except for the washer notch in the venturi...

    Nitrate mystery....is it the sand?

Sitting reading your post, Paul and nodding my head in agreement! Just going through the tail of one now ... seems to come around annually  Yep, all the snails, crabs, etc., are well and good and necessary but algae is part of a natural cycle. The best way to treat it is good husbandry...

    Ozone problem

Absolutely right Greg! It has stabilised ... 320mV. Tell you what, the skimmer is ripping some serious stuff out of the water. I'm getting about a cup per day of real black foul smelling yuk! There's a minor amount of hair algae that has invaded the damaged / dead acro but I think this is just...

    Ozone problem

My pH and ORP (nearly left that out then realised ... ) probes were last cleaned a month ago in Vodka ... I know I should rather be drinking it! ... So I've just cleaned them again after Greg's post and returned them to their sentry posts. Yikes!!! After an hour, ORP is sitting at 280mV. Please...

    Ozone problem

Ahh! Thanks Anthony! You made me feel much better about my husbandry techniques if I may be so presumptious! :D Turning my ozone off for the time being is more to try and reduce any O3 running amok in the display before I build the GAC filter for the skimmer outflow and restart the business...

    Ozone problem

I have had some good discussion with Boomer. There are a few things that seem to be an issue for my techniques: (1) The use of kitty litter as a desiccant for my air-dryer -- now removed; don't really need an air-dryer anyway as the fishroom is climate controlled. (2) The ozone is metered...

    Ozone problem

Thanks Wrightme43, I'll get onto Boomer :D Tone

    Ozone problem

Greg, I use an air-dryer on my ozonator fashioned from a container filled with 'cat sand' large absorptive aggregate. If the dryer-less ozone create bromide, then I have no idea what it might be putting back into my water. Tone

    Ozone problem

Greg, Empathise with you for I too have experienced a similar outcome. My Ozonator is a Hailea HLO 800 which is small for my 150gal display and the ozone is dosed straight into the beckett skimmer. I believe that a contributing factor in my case may have been a change of MH reflectors to a...
