    Quick question

Hello, The coral is most likely Anthelia (this can be determined if the polyps are attached together). It can be difficult to remove as they are attached to the rock securely and will out compete most corals. Even a small amount of tissue left behind will quickly regrow. A pair of tweezers will...

Commensal Birdsnest Pistol shrimp? ID pics for you, Leslie

Hello Brie, Very nice pictures! I don't have an ID but they are quite common in medium to large colonies and will live without problems with the commensal crabs in the same colony. The problem I've found is that algae tends to grow around the areas they inhabit. This could be due to the lack of...

    ID Acro, first one ever

Hello, It is very hard to ID Acropora when grown into a colony. A frag is even more difficult. It is most certainly an Acropora species but almost impossible identify which one. Give it six months or so and post another picture. Regards, Kevin

    Coral ID

Thanks for the links Brie :) Michael's thread on RC has some real sweet specimens. I'm thinking a 200 gal with just Montipora would be quite a sight. Regards, Kevin

    Coral ID

Hello, Veron lists more than 70 species of Montipora which makes it difficult to make an ID down to the species level. That being said it looks like M. confusa to me. Time will tell as M. confusa grows small columns from its plates. Sometimes the plates can be almost the size of a dinner plate...

    ac7av tank build

Hello, The appearance of algae and/or cyanobacteria is result of excess nutrients (more import than export). A brief description of cyanobacteria can be found here from UC Berkeley: Introduction to the Cyanobacteria As you can read it is a survivor and has been around awhile :) Small amounts of...

    chemicals

Hello, Some of the items shown can be quite toxic in elevated levels therefore it would be unwise to use them until you know what your current levels are and how much they will rise for a given dose. Regards, Kevin

    Birdsnest issues

Hello, I would cut the coral in a couple of areas just above receded part to be safe. Mount these frags in a high flow area regardless of light intensity. Seriatopora really like high flow and without it the insides of colonies can die and the fouling of the tissue can poison the entire colony...
