    Hardware store sands in reefs

Did you want to use the DSB for nitrate control? Maybe a shallow sandbed for the appearance and a sulphur denitrator for nitrate control. I made one out of a ro/di canister and had 0 nitrates coming out of the unit in about 2 weeks.

Anyone ever seen a BLACK encrusting sps?

That might be some type of sponge, but thats just a guess. I have seen something like that on some cultured frags before but did not see any polyps. I scrapped them off as it was growing too close to the frag but I don't recall it having a hard base.

    yay new tank to ruin.

I 've seen people use XM 20k's after using Radiums and the color seemed pretty close. And I can't remember exactly but they seemed to last much longer than the radiums. And growth was pretty good. Where did you get your rocks? Looks good.

    yay new tank to ruin.

I am not sure how long the Reeflux lasts but changing out the Radiums every 6-8 months gets old even though they have such great color. Can't wait till the tank is fully up and running.

    How is Aberdeen WA?

I was wondering what people's impression of the city of Aberdeen Wa? My folks are thinking of purchasing a motel there and we've gone there several times, and parts of town seem pretty run down. But I don't know if the town is in a decline phase or its starting to pick itself back up. I know...

    new fuel?

That is pretty cool. One problem of using water as fuel by breaking it down to its components is that the amount of energy needed to break down the bonding is less than the energy released.

    Island Retirement Dream

Jiddy, You can live on Guam but then go fly out to islands like Palau once in a while for the diving. I would rather live on a tourist island cause stuff like power and water would be more reliable in addition to paved roads. Plus I would look for an island under American or at least European...

Are Triggers safe around sps corals?

thumperss, Did you have a bad experience with these two fish and hard corals? Or are you just talking about them going after the clean-up crew? I remember people telling me that they'll pick off the inverts but did not hear anything about hard corals. I had a humumu trigger and a fugu puffer a...

Help: Some "mushroom-like" stuff is growing wild...

Try to syphon out as much as possible before using the flatworm exit. I've heard of bad things happening if too many die off at one time.

    Tank help please

My friends tank crashed after using erythromycin to treat his red slime. His tank was looking good except for the red slime, and in the days after using the remover lost most of his fish and corals. The sudden death of all the red slime was too much for his tank to handle I guess. Sorry to say...

    just somthing to think about

One fish can poop a lot. And even if the corals like all the fish waste, packing in a lot of fish in a ten gallon won't be good for the fish. If you want your corals to feed more, I'm sure they're lots of prepared foods you could feed the tank without the added bioload of fish.

    Difference between scolymia & cynaria...ID

cynaruba...I like that :) I thought it looked like a scolymia but I couldn't really say why, but I see what you're saying about the difference in the skin texture. Good eye on the color. Its actually supposed to be more red but it got a little bleached recently. Its not in my tank yet, I just...

    Difference between scolymia & cynaria...ID

Is there a characteristic that is helpful in differentiating a scolymia and a cynaria. I was told this is a scolymia which I also thought it looked like. But then it also could be just a big cynaria maybe. Any thoughts?

    luminarc vs reef optix

I have read that the Luminarcs have a better spread while the Reefoptix will have a slightly hotter spotlight effect in the middle. Having to take off the canopy for normal maintance will be a pain longterm and not sure worth the difference in light spread. Why not go with the Luminmax. About...

    Austrailian Corals

They typically are more expensive. The only coral I have seen with any regularity from Australia are elegances and they are quite a bit more expensive than the indo variety.

Every Reefers Worst Nightmare come true -Warning graphic photos

Sorry you have to go through this. I had the same thing happen a few years back. I went on an overnight trip and came back to a tank with a heater with a crack. I had die off the first day but it was around 3 days when the full extent of the damage was evident. After the initial and subsequent...
