    Aqua Remora Skimmers

I've used both a Remora and RemoraPro on my tank(s) for years. I currently have a RemoraPro on my 80+20 gallon system (as a HOB skimmer in my sump) and I have a Remora on my 20 gallon Nano. They're reliable--but they're not great skimmers---if you're spending money on a new skimmer you can...

    Customer Appreciation Sale 2011

Thanks! yeah I vaguely remember something about umbrellas too... but then couldn't find it in the thread either--wasn't sure if it was real or if I dreamt it. Since I've been dreaming** about the B.R.A. sale every night for a month now--so the dreaming and waking is starting to blur together...

    Customer Appreciation Sale 2011

What time do we start "busting doors" for the door busters on Sat/Sunday? (That poor door has already been throughalot this year, it shouldn't have to take much more abuse! ;-)

    Doubling up on filter socks?

I don't think doubling-up is going to be much of an improvement... if the particle is >199 microns it's still going to get through both socks. You'd be better off getting a 25 or 50 (or 100) micron filter bag to up your filter sock in. (sock becomes a pre-filter, bag becomes the final polish.)

    Plumbing my sump please help!

Yep, that exactly what I did. :) I have a mag12 powering my chiller (could have used a mag9 if the plumbing-loop wasn't 30ft long) I have another mag12 powering my return + a RemoraPro + a gravity-drain fuge. (through lots of elbows and valves and tee's) And I have the mag12 dialed WAAAY back...

    Ro/Di Setup

I don't think there's any system on the market that would have the "salt bucket automatically mix the salt"--you're going to need a human being (or a robot, or a very skilled monkey) to read your salinity level, measure and add more more salt, re-test the salinity, repeat, etc. ;-) There are...

Having to move within the next month..

When I've moved my tank, I've found that I can never have enough extra: *pre-mixed salt-water: I usually set aside at least 25% of tank volume, buffered and mixed ahead of time (especially if you have a sand bed--plan that you're just going to dump the last few inches of water, because it will...

    Plumbing my sump please help!

Not sure if you plan to have a refugium chamber in your sump too... If you do, then your plumbing layout sounds great (pulling your warm chiller water from the drain chamber and then putting the cooled water back in the return chamber) it should reduce your flow rate through the fuge section a...

    Bulk Head Leaking

Some of the better hardware stores (Ace, Mclendon's, etc) also sell flexible (rubber) pipe couplings/adapters (with stainless clamps)--I found an Ace brand adapter (it was either 1->1.25" or 1.25->1.5", I forget) that fit my flex pvc and then fit over the funky (not-1") bulkhead threads...

Advice on removing a center brace?

Thanks for the tips Don! I get it: a small sag in a 1/16" reveal is a lot more noticeable than a small change in a 1/2" reveal. And i take no offense about the quality of the stand--I didn't build it. And it was the ONLY black 75 gallon stand available the day i bought the system. (and hasn't...

Advice on removing a center brace?

Sounds like a great plan, Thanks Don! I have a bottle of "Gorilla glue"--is that an okay glue to use for this application, or should I get some traditional wood glue instead With the plywood strips glued to the back of the rail, do you think it will be strong enough to remove the center brace...

Advice on removing a center brace?

Okay, here's the pics. (The white panel at the top is rigid foam which is attached to the underside of the tank) But there's no plywood sheet or any other bracing structure between the foam and the tank. The tank sits on the 1x4" horizontal rails, the rails rest on the 1x5" center braces and...

Advice on removing a center brace?

Thanks all, I'll post some pics tonight. I KNEW I should have taken pics last night but was too wiped out to find the camera. (And the plumbing for my sump is kind of a mess right now so I didn't want it captured on film yet. ;-) The stand construction is.... odd. there's no plywood deck (just...

    Question about transferring a tank

yeah I've used coolers a couple times with good results. (first out of necessity, it was October and everything was moved in an open pickup bed) then for convenience during the second move (larger coolers, less carrying of buckets)--and those the rolling coolers w/ wheels are really NICE...

    Question about transferring a tank

I've moved my tank across town twice--pods are actually pretty sturdy, I've found them swimming around in the bottom of the buckets the day AFTER the move (w/o any circulation or heat overnight). Coolers work better than buckets at keeping things warm though (and large trash bags are an easy...

Advice on removing a center brace?

So I plan to install my first sump this weekend, but I need to temporarily remove the center brace in my wooden stand to fit the sump in... My plan is to remove the front center brace (1x5" wood) from my 48x18" by bracing the center of the stand with a 4' piece of 2x4" as the horizontal beam...

Poll: Who has been injured by their tank?

Wow! I can't top that either! But let's not forget emotional scars... my worst reefing injury was: a broken heart. ;-( (Jan 1, 2011: A broken heater started a bio-crash, and most of my 4 year old reef vanished almost over-night.) As a grown-man, that sad morning was the only time I can...

    SeaSwirl or SCWD?

Oh Yes, I do NOT trust the check valve only--like I said, I AM going to drill a siphon-break hole (2! actually!) when I install my final plumbing. ;-) I'm just using a temporary plastic-tote right now, which has more room for overflow/drain-down than my actual sump does.

    SeaSwirl or SCWD?

So you run 2 sea-swirls overlapping? I thought that would be a good idea---nice alternating current, right? But not sure if I have the room for 2 swirls on my tank-lip. That why I was leaning towards the SCWD (just need space for 2 small return lines then.) I actually not too concerned about...

    SeaSwirl or SCWD?

Oh yeah, I already have a 1" check valve installed, so I have no back-siphon from my return line anymore. AND I WILL be drilling a hole for siphon-break too, when I get my final plumbing installed. Because I've already had 1 flood** with the temporary plumbing (Wind-storm knocked out the power...
