    SPS Flesh Peeling/lifting from Skeleton

Hey Kevin- Thanks for the quick reply. We isolate the different types of corals and systems as much as possible to cut back on chemical warfare by running all water through the skimmers/carbon etc before it recirculated. Each tank also has carbon running on it to help reduce the amounts in...

    SPS Flesh Peeling/lifting from Skeleton

Hey Kevin- I'm hoping that you might be able to shed some light on an issue I've seen in one of my SPS aquaculture tanks. The total system volume is 1600 gallons and has been running for 3 years now. We have an "open ocean" tank that is 100% dark and makes it easy for us to do large h2o...

Lack of failsafe's is causing my tank crash

Hey Duane! Bummer to hear about the mini disaster. When we setup new tanks up for clients there is always the "why do I need two of those" or "is that really necessary". I try to explain over and over that the ocean does not like being in a box, water loves to fall, and YOU CAN NEVER BE TO...

    Acro trouble

What did you use to dip your corals? My suggestion would be to dip in a revive dip 3 cap fulls per gallon and soak for 8 minutes and shake them well before removing (you can use up to 4 capfuls per gallon but 3 kills AEFW) I would also inspect the corals when you pull them out of the tank...

    SPS colors?

I've seen this type of bleaching time and time again with LEDs. My service company has used many of the top brands and without fail, the coral health over time just goes down hill. Sure they look great under the blues but as soon as you look at them under any sort of normal light, you can see...

    Brightwell Salt Bucket Update

I've found the best way to use brightwell is in a 50/50 mix with h2ocean. I usually mix a full 150 gal bucket of each in a 300 tower for my system and 9 times out of 10, the combination mixes at about 9.2-9.8dkh, 415-435 ca, and 1330-1365 mg. In my opinion it's pretty much spot on. (I would...

    School's out for Solana 34??

If you can get your hands on some healthy red spot cardinals, they stay small and school and look great in smaller reefs

    Quiet air cooled pumps (external)

I'm enjoying the 70 degree weather in the middle of winter down here in the bay. I have to get my sponsor stuff together so I can start showing off my aquaculture project (~1600 gallons and growing everyday!)

    Acropora Eating starfish

I've noticed that the populations of these types of starfish often correlate to your nitrate levels. Like most say they do tend to seem to just consume algae/diatom. They do however enjoy congregating on a dying/damaged coral. So the real question is...are they really the problem or just...

    Quiet air cooled pumps (external)

try an atb flowstar ...they are just as quiet as the red dragon's and a fraction of the price...plus you don't have to deal with proline aquatics to get one

Which salt mix do you use?

I've found that a 50/50 mix of Neo Marine Brightwell salt and H2Ocean mix up damn near perfect every time. Like any salt, it helps to mix the full buckets at once which is why I make 300 gallons at a time :)

A fast way to scrape coraline on Acrylic

Dobie pads are the **** and work great as long as you don't run them on dry acrylic. As with any pad though, over time it's bound to leave a bit of that spider web looking scratches. Just cut the end off, remove the pad, place it over the wetside of your magnet scaper and you are on your way...

    User tips for Vortech MP40

the way in which you actually orient the wetside affects how much air it pulls in. You'll notice that there is a thicker plastic part in the grate and that is what you need to rotate to move it closer to the surface. As for how many of these pumps I maintain...i would say somewhere in the...

    User tips for Vortech MP40

They have a shorter life span on parts if you run them on the pulse mode constantly. It's cheaper to buy the pieces to fix them when they break then the new wet assemblies as a whole. The rusting out on the older models will be replaced for free if you send the pieces back. They will rust out...

    H2Ocean salt question

I've been testing a bunch of salts to decide what one my maintenance company will be using: Aquavistro Salinity: Salt left a really thick white residue in my 300 gal mixing container and never really cleared up. The levels tested damn close to what they claimed which was nice but I didn't like...

    Coral Beauty

is the fish in an empty tank because that would make just about any fish "nervous" Try throwing in a couple of cut pieces of PVC for him to hide in.

    Coral Beauty

it can be pretty amazing what comes off of these fish when they come in. It drives me nuts that more stores don't take the time to properly treat and quarantine prior to sale...not just throw them into a bunch of copper and hope for the best...

How to get rid of Cyano

if you're looking for a chemical solution, erythromycin works wonders but this also wipes out beneficial bacteria and will set cycling back a bit. This treatment does not affect corals in a negative way at all from what i've seen...i've done it several times in tanks that i maintain as a...
