    flat worms

Salifert "Flatworm Exit" worked really well for me and didn't harm any of my fish or corals. Make sure to siphon out as many as possible first as the dieing flatworms can give off a toxic chemical. I had a ton, they did not hurt anything, just multiple fast and take over the rock. I have not...

    Mandarin Goby?

I would agree that mandarins are very slow and dwell on the rocks and sand/bottom. I also witnessed my large coral banded shrimp grab one of my mandarins. I was tempted to get rid of the shrimp but decided to wait and see what happens. Its been about three months and my pair of mandarins are...

    Chalice needs help

It does get some detritus from time to time, but I do use a turkey baster when I see some. The majority of the chalice is doing well, I just tend to freak out because it is one of my favorite pieces. I am tempted to move it under a shelf were it would be partially shaded like treehugger...

    Chalice needs help

I have had this beautiful large chalice for about 8 months. It was located near the top of my tank w/ 250w 14k HQI halides with generic bulbs and ballasts. Everything was great for about 6 months and then I upgraded to lumitek ballasts and 10k Ushio bulbs. The edges started turning a a little...

    Calibrating Temp Controllers

What do you guys use to set your initial temp setting when calibrating your temp controller? I have a few of those cheap glass thermometers, but they are fairly inaccurate. I know consistency is the key when maintaining a successful reef, but I’m curious where to find a accurate glass...

Odyssea Light system... Yae or Nay???

Yes, same camera and same settings. The lumatek ballasts are about $120 each. They have great tech. support located out of the Bay Area CA. Also, the 5 year warranty really caught my attention. You would have to take your fixture almost all the way apart and splice in a few wires, took me...

    acrylic flame polishing?

I agree w/ Don. I wet wet sanded & buffed out a ton of scratches before I filled my used 125g. I used 800grit and a block on the real bad scratches, and worked my way up to 3000grit (800 - 1000 - 1200 - 1500 - 2000 - 2500 - 3000). Then with some standard car compound and polish, buffed out my...

Odyssea Light system... Yae or Nay???

Pictures, as you requested. These pictures are with the same bulb, ushio 10k's. At first I thought the bulbs that came w/ the fixture was the main source of the problem, but after I swapped out the bulbs I had the same poor results, I knew it was the ballasts. The Odyssey ballast for the...

Odyssea Light system... Yae or Nay???

I bought the 48" about a year ago. IMO, you must change the ballasts. I bouht two ballasts from marinedepot, lumitec and they were about $110 each. The lighting difference was night and day. My big Chalice actually started bleaching a little due the the huge difference in light output...

    Help w/ hitchhiker ID

They are pretty big. I sucked about 8 more up after I found the first one. I have not seen any since and it has been about 3 weeks. Hopefully that did the trick. I thought it was pretty cool that they change color to match the zoos they are eating. Regardless, I will be dipping...

Has anyone ever used this light fixture?

The ebay fixtures appear to be a good deal like deezn7 said, but keep in mind the bulbs and ballast that come with these fixtures are junk. If you do buy one from ebay, plan on buying a name brand ballast and bulbs for at least the mh part.

    Help w/ hitchhiker ID

Thank you. I have read up on a dip using lugol's iodine from MUCHO REEF on RC. My question is after I preform this dip/shake/inspect for eggs, do I have to leave my main tank dormant for these little buggers to die out? I do have another qt tank that I can place my zoo's in for a while. Do...

New Ballasts -- Chalice bleaching ???

Thank you for the advice. I did move the chalice to the sand bed, and I also have 3 layers of screens on top of that side of the tank. I also spot fed the chalice last night to help w/ recovery. I will keep you guys posted. I never even thought that different ballasts of the same wattage...

    Distance between electronic ballasts

If I remember correctly, my 250w lumatek ballasts stated 6" distance between them. Lumatek customer support is great, a phone call would not hurt. They are located in California, Bay Area. Good Luck!

New Ballasts -- Chalice bleaching ???

Hi everyone, I have one of the cheapo 48" e-bay lamp fixtures w/ 2 250w hqi halides, pc's and moonlights. About a week ago I bought new Lumitek ballasts for the MH's. The output is awesome, and for anyone running cheap ballasts, the $100 investment for one ballast is worth every...

    silly water change question

IMO, turn everything off, take the water out of the display, since it is much easier and more room to do everything. Also, it provides you with a good opportunity to siphon the gravel and clean things up a bit. Then pump your new saltwater back into the display, and turn everything back on...
