    Syphoning gravel

What Krish said! Be gentle when you syphon the sand, most people say to just clean up the top layer.

    lighting question

Sure thing, I was pretty sure you had a handle on it based on how careful you have been :-)

    lighting question

Wow! it sounds like you got a killer deal! Well, if you are running both the vho and the MH during your peak lighting you are dumping a TON of light in the tank, 940w is a lot into a 120 gal. I'm pretty sure that the 6700k light has great water penetration which is going to put a lot more light...

    lighting question

A couple of questions: How many total watts of VHO do you have? The T-5 is a seperate fixture that is not running except when the other lights are off (during maint)? Why did you choose such a low frequency for the HQI? -Todd

    Newbee to RF

Welcome to RF! As to using nudi's, I put 5 in a friends aptasia over-run 40 cube. Not a thing happened (that I could see) for three weeks. Then... aptasia started going away. So awesome! It's on week five and while there are still some aptasia in the tank there are fewer every day. I did get to...

    An idea for our club!

That is a great idea Jeremy! I think that we should post (somewhere) items that are still needed.

    I need some serious help!

I'm thinking of heading out of my place 11 or noon. I need to verify that Richard can go. Jeremy offered to ride along as well :-) -Todd

Then your other post is a double win! The larger panel will allow him to drop the new plumbing down a bit and still incorperate the original hole.

Oh, I'm good either day, but Sunday is prolly better.

    I need some serious help!

Yep, I like Titan's idea. There are some plastic grommets made to go through drywall, but I don't know if they go that big. I'll ask the plumber. I think they are more typically used for copper. Plumber says that you can use a wye to 1.5", but doing two drains would be much safer. I don't...

I'm in Floyd, let me know which day. I may be able to bring my mostly tame "real life plumber" friend along if the day works out for him. -Also Todd

best lighting for a reef tank that will not break the bank

:-) Not arguing the efficacy of T5, just the cost. By your math 2 250 watt HQI would be $120 for 500 watts vs $126 for 6 54 watt T5 at 324 watts. Leaving aside the original question of which is better for the OP's tank, I agree with mouse that Halide bulbs are cheaper watt for watt. The OP did...

best lighting for a reef tank that will not break the bank

Hahahaha, posted at the same time with different results. By your own math, a single halide 250w is $60 per year, and a 4 bulb T5 216w would be $84 :-) More for less... or about the same if you change your halides before 12 months. No argument at all with the rest of it!

best lighting for a reef tank that will not break the bank

You can find decent deals on used T-5 or Halide fixtures. Either will do the job. Decent 54watt T-5 bulbs are about $25 each and you would need 5 to do the job of a single 250w HQI so about $125 vs a 250w HQI at ~$75 per bulb. Halide bulb prices are more economical. T-5 Does use less power and...

    I need some serious help!

Looks like there will be a NSR meeting on Sat. If you are going to the meeting, we will have to do Sunday. I am game for either day, I just have to plan the non-Floyd day for putting boats away for the winter.
