    New sump design

That's a good idea! I have found that quite a bit of sediment collects in places. And the sump I have now is next to impossible to clean in some areas.

    New sump design

I was thinking 18" to keep the splashing contained. It seems that there's always something making a mess... Functionally, it could be about 16" tall. At 18" I can still get the skimmer out. My current sump is 21" tall and I can get it out. I'm with you both on not having sand in the refugium. I...

Yep! It's helpful from time to time!

    New sump design

mfinn, Yes, I am building the container too. The last one I made using a CNC, but this time I will see if I can get the non-rectangular pieces waterjet cut.

    New sump design

About 2 years ago I built a custom sump. From what I've learned since then, I've come up with a new one. My main reasons for changing are: 1. The ASM skimmer doesn't fit well. 2. Plus there ins't much room for a refugium. 3. The flow path is not very good. This is a rough design that is long...

    Skimmer overflow problem

I think you guys were right about it being something chemical. I did a couple large water changes and stopped adding the AZ-NO3 and things seem to be OK now. I also discovered that they fish were getting fed way too much. Hopefully, that will help with getting rid of the algae.

    Skimmer overflow problem

I figured out what happened. I have my pre-mix tank in the garage. When I do a water change I close the overflow on the sump then open the fill from the garage. Once the sump is filled, I close the fill valve and open the overflow. This time, I ran out of water in the pre-mix tank so I forgot to...

    Skimmer overflow problem

I did a big water change last night. Also rearranged the tank and cleaned off a bunch of the algae. The skimmer is still bubbling a lot, but not as bad. The bad news is that something went wrong with the ATO and forgot to re-open the emergency overflow valve (it has to be closed when the tank is...

    Skimmer overflow problem

I need to modify the sump so I can move the skimmer. The pump is in on one side of a baffle so the inlet tube into the skimmer goes through a hole. Hopefully I can do that soon!

    Skimmer overflow problem

Oops 1guydude I should have got what you meant... It's in 10" of water. The skimmer is the main problem. I can't even turn it on without if foaming like crazy now. A while ago I built an overly complicated sump that doesn't allow me to adjust the depth of the skimmer. I didn't follow the...

    Skimmer overflow problem

I have an ATO. The ph concerns me too. It went up to where it is over the course of almost a year. But during that time, the tank seemed healthy. The tank is an Oceanic 57. I can measure it tonight, but I'd guess it's about 16" deep. I will try running the skimmer drier and report back.

    Skimmer overflow problem

Thanks for the comments! The brain died in October. Right after that the nitrates shot up. I did a bunch of water changes and started using AZ-NO3. The algae was dying off pretty quick, but in the last couple of weeks it started blooming like crazy! I have an ASM skimmer. It usually works well...

    Skimmer overflow problem

Every so often the skimmer starts bubbling like crazy. The day before this picture almost the entire area on top of the sump was covered in foam. All the levels are good in the tank. Last summer I was out of town for 2 weeks. I turned the house A/C off and the tank chiller couldn't keep up so...

The Pros and Cons of Reactors and Dosing Pumps

Great thread! I am wanting to get some dosing pumps. I've been mixing and dosing daily and it is getting old. My question is about which dosing pumps do people recommend? I will control them with my Apex. Most of what I've found are around $100 except the Tom Aquatics Aqua Lifter which is around...

DIY LED build machined from billet alluminum

I got the light back from anodize this week. It looks pretty good! I handed it off to my buddy for the light installation. I'm not sure what this looks like in person. He said that it looks whiter in person than in the picture.

DIY LED build machined from billet alluminum

Thanks guys! My buddy finished the design for the control box/wall mount. Unfortunately, I won't be back on this before the end of February. Come March, this is my priority. He's got this light bar sitting on his desk and wants the rest! :-) I'm not sure that this would be a very marketable...

DIY LED build machined from billet alluminum

Thank peppie. My buddy is going to design the electronics box next. Hopefully this gets wrapped up in the next month or 2.

DIY LED build machined from billet alluminum

I got distracted on some other projects for a while. Tonight I got the light body finished. It turned out nice! I got some more details from my buddy about the light. There are going to be 74 LEDs. A bunch of white and blues. 2 reds and 2 moon lights. He's using the Dim4 Controller. That is one...

    Crazy Algae Growth

WOW! His tank is awesome!!! Thinking about it a little more, there isn't room in the closet for a fuge. But, I could build a heated enclosure in the crawl space. As long as I don't need to mess with it daily, access isn't too bad. I like the number of fish that I have so more water and bio...
