    Enclosed aircooled lights?

remember the glass in the light's hood is more than a safety shield... it is a UV shield. Removing that glass will result in a flood of UV over your tank and will kill most everything in hours. We recently had a school in seattle that the janitors forgot to put the glass back in the metal...

    Enclosed aircooled lights?

No, it never does end. I just built the stand for a 20 gallon that will pull water from my main tank, and dump it back into the refugium of my main tank... all for a Mantis. I've wanted to do it for a while... and looks like after this weekend I'll be ready to order one. It never ends.

Where to snorkel in Hawaii, Mexico, or bahamas

So, I am asking for help here. I cannot Dive, or go deeper than 10' without extreme pain. So... We are looking for either Mexico, bahamas, or hawaii. I want to be able to walk down to the beach, stick my face in the water and be amazed. 2 years ago we stayed at the fairmont Kihea. It was that...

    Enclosed aircooled lights?

NOISE! I almost forgot. If air is too turbulent or the fan is cavitating too badly... it will be extremely loud. 1 thing to do is to turn the fan down if it is adjustable... or baffle the fan. Most fans have a shroud (spelling sucks). This is a cover on 1 side fo the blades that looks like a...

    Enclosed aircooled lights?

No Problem... thanks for your support. This time of year I have more time on my hand. Some thoughts: If you can have fans push air in from the back or from the edges pushing fresh air into the hood... I wouldn't worry about where it escapes... it will find a way. Only if it remains very hot at...

    Enclosed aircooled lights?

Also... I'd add fans in a non permanent way... No drilling either... make sure you get the benefit you want before you make it permanent. Fans pushing air in are so efficient... you might be suprised where you feel air escaping the enclosure or how far the fans will open hood/stand doors on...

    Enclosed aircooled lights?

Wow. Nice set up. That's alot of work. I built the stand for my 180... but I didn't incorporate a hood or side unit. That is really creative. Let me see if I have things correct. Looking at your system from the front. See link...

    Enclosed aircooled lights?

DonW I've used a powerhead to stir things up, break up the sand, free detritus for filtering... like a mini storm. I've never thought about creating a hurricane. I think that fan would cool most tanks. I do think it may be a little loud though. :) I'd have to turn the radio up ALOT.

    Enclosed aircooled lights?

No Problem. Do you have pics? Also, I have to be honest... what spurred most of my research wasn't this hobby, rather the best way to cool amp racks that are in the sun... and keep them clean on the inside. I am partner in a company that handles alot of the concerts, events, installs, etc. in...

    Enclosed aircooled lights?

Squirrel cage fans are really efficient, and designed to PULL air from enclosed spaces. Love em. But they are a little large for most people... and they can get a little loud when they get older. Venting out the top is by far the best place for exhaust. Or, if your hood isn't air tight...

    Enclosed aircooled lights?

Hey guys, Great questions and answers. Here is the results of some research i have done for this hobby and for my industry. To maximize your cooling for air cooled fixtures here is what I found to be the most effective: Saltwater tanks: Fan blowing accross water column, the fan should push...

Using your overflows into DIY skimmer

BTW... there is almost no bubbles in my sump, and no salt creep anywhere in my sump... my sump that has a return as well, and that the fuge dumps into... I am currently growing salt creep art sculptures I'll sell on E-bay someday and retire because of the profits! To remedy that, I also 90'd...

Using your overflows into DIY skimmer

Clamlubber- Actually, since I am pushing this water (in the return) 12-18" down to the bottom of my fuge (which is a 20 gallon tall) then it 90's across the bottom to the edge where I can reach it and maintain it, the 90's up 2 inches, 90's left and immediately 90's straight up... the bubbles...

Using your overflows into DIY skimmer

I had to move some stuff out of the way so you could see it through the water... but it is pretty dang simple. This 23 gal (tall), fuge dumps into a standard 20 gallon. In there I did something very similar to stop bubbles from being in the water near my intake... I turned the pipe straight...

Using your overflows into DIY skimmer

Lets see how attaching pictures goes. These are some quick shots before I go to bed. The water leaves the tank out of 1 or 2 overflows in the back. It has a shut off valve and a quick release coupler... then travels straight to the bottom of the refugium. It 90 degrees to the front of the tank...

Using your overflows into DIY skimmer

After spending far too much money on different skimmers... I gave up and used the drains from my main tank into my fuge as the skimmer. Rather than stop the bubbles that were building up... I simply allowed them to form... infact I increased water volume through the drain on that side of the...

    What camera do you use?

Next year I will be heading back to Fairbanks AK to show my wife around were I used to go in the summer. We still have a chunk of land and a couple homes up there. There will be some fun shots of wild life... it seems everything is a little bigger up there. But the cool part is, I will have...
