    If you kept them clean it would be fine, but yes would lead to spike in nitrates if you didn't, so most people don't recommend it

    White sand

    I would advise against adding the black as well, unless you don't mind adding a ph buffer. I went with a black sand for my SB and didn't like it, ended up covering the top with crushed coral that I had from a previous setup.

    Exactly, I've never really known what the ideal result should be. Sometimes I get thick, sometimes I get thin, depending on water level I assumed, hoping there was more to it than that though.
