    Mantis or Pistol

I'm assuming that pistols don't wonder very far from their territory as i check every night for the little blighter, as for losing fish, i haven't lost any since the chromis, i still have two left so that was probably just coincidence:)

    lighting

14k MH are good with a few compact actinics for that bluish tinge look. I also use a couple of marine white compact T5's to highlight shadowed areas and the background, works well for me :)

    Background: Black or blue

The solid back is a good idea, suppose it would also stop the distorted look you get with the other stuff when light shines on it but as for cleaning with a magna float, well I can't get around the back of my tank very easy :)

    Which algae?

I'd like to grow some type of algae in my tank, problem is, I have a sailfin tang and a foxface and they will devour any algae that i put in , they even ate the 'maidens hair algae' that i put in, which is suppose to be toxic so the fish don't like the taste, not so the case with my fish...

I changed to blue and reckon it suits the tank, it makes the tank brighter looking :)

    green hair algae going crazy

Are you pulling the hair algae out. Hair algae traps detrius within it self which supplies it's own food supply as the detrius breaks down into nitrates and phosphates.
