Calcium Reactors and their best features

I have a DIY reactor, and I think it does a fairly good job for me. It handles the tanks needs which is my main concern. Improvements on my design would to add a CO2 Re-Circulation line to mine, much as was discussed in the RC thread linked above. The re-circ line would draw from the highest...

    SPS?

Mushrooms, button polyps, and leathers are among the easiest of beginner's corals. Once you get your feet wet with those (and allow your tank to mature more) you will be able to start doing harder corals like the LPS, and then finally you can move into the most difficult to keep (most demanding...

All right, Mojo; we want MACNA details!

In all honesty, he spent most of his weekend tormenting those with DSBS  :? When he would get bored of that, it was off to get people to fight over the price of a rubber coral    Great to finally meet ya Mike! Hope you had as good of a time as I did over...

    photo gallery?

Is there some sort of special trick I need to perform to see pictures in the gallery? I see the poster's name, ratings, comments, #times viewed, but no pictures? :( Thanks for the help, Cos

    Care to solve a mystery?

I understand the fact that low pH is a factor needed for calcite formation to occur, but this happens naturally inside said coral. The coral uptakes these elements into it's tissue, where it can manipulate those with a lower in-body pH, effectively forming calcite. Am I wrong? :) Now, I'm not...

The truth and nothing but the Truth about BLUE TORTS

Well, like I said... I was TOLD this was a Tort, by someone we all know and love dearly :D It was given to me as an echinata, but I'm finally having doubts as to that species. Anyways, here's the pic :) (although you've already seen it playa!)

The truth and nothing but the Truth about BLUE TORTS

Not to get back on topic or anything ;) But is there any way you can show me a closeup of the polyps on that purple monster Kev? I've been *told* that I may have a tort also, but much darker in coloration. Mine has very distinctive polyps though, IMO. Thanks, Cos

    Care to solve a mystery?

[qoute]Yep citrates, sulfates, and ammonium ions are not what you want in a stoney tank. From what I know all stoneys make thier skelitons from argonite not calcite (well a couple of softies do). Whether or not you want them in your stoney tank is a moot point. You know as well as I that the...

    Care to solve a mystery?

Actually, I was just reading the other day about this. I found it in Borneman's Aquarium corals book. Anyways, he was discussing skeletogenesis, and how it occurred in coral skeletons. It mentioned the fact that citrates, sulfates, and ammonium, along with a "lower" pH, actually promoted the...

DIY denitrator 'd ever worked? for any one?

Sealing is surely part of the key, but so is the fact that there's 50 Ft of tubing there. The length is critical, as this is where the aerobic bacteria are going to harbor, suffocating the water of any available oxygen, and turning it anaerobic. The aerobic bacteria are located in a well enough...

DIY denitrator 'd ever worked? for any one?

Yes, the goal for a denitrator should be 0 nitrates coming out of it's output. I should mention that it will take time to naturally bring down the nitrates. But by the amount yours has reduced in the past week, it sounds as if yours is working just fine. Let it run for awhile longer without...

DIY denitrator 'd ever worked? for any one?

Well, It's been quite a few years since I've bothered tinkering with those, but what it comes down to is controlling the output well enough to just read 0 nitrates coming out of the tube. If you are reading nitrates, you have too fast of a flow going through it, and hence too much oxygen too...

    Care to solve a mystery?

Well Mojo, you're sort of missing the point here :) By doing regular water changes and unsettling the top of the DSB, you get much of what was going to be soaked up by the bed, before it ever gets TO the bed. When I do a water change, I turkey baste my rocks, getting it all into the water...

    red bugs

I've heard and read quite abit about them too, and it seems I also get to observe them first hand. They have began to infest my tank slowly, now being spotted on every colored stag I have, totalling *5* in number (see below)... They have also been spotted on one of three "brown (under my...

    Care to solve a mystery?

I don't know if you can go that far Tom... If you mean the black areas in the sand when you mention "anaerobic sulfide reduction areas", I have seen several of these pockets occur less than 1/2" from the surface in the 2" bed of my nano, leading me to believe they can't be ALL anaerobic in...

DIY denitrator 'd ever worked? for any one?

Not sure if you know how to properly operate one or not, but it takes a few weeks before there is enough bacteria present to see a decrease in nitrate. If the water flow is too fast, it will also not work properly. You might also have to supply a food source for the bacteria until they are...

    Care to solve a mystery?

I can tell you ALL about this one, as a pair of peppermint shrimp/aptasia controllers decimated the life in my bed in short order (2 weeks time). Currently, there isn't much in the way of life in my display's DSB. Fortunately, because of the wave motion in the main tank, most of it settles out...

    Care to solve a mystery?

Sorry I haven't been back in a few days, RL has kept me busy lately. I had pretty much neglected testing the past few days, but I managed to run a set again this morning, and levels have still remained constant, with the exception of that slight rise in P<.05. However, I have noticed other...

    Care to solve a mystery?

Isn't that part of the reason we're over here? :D I can understand your thinking Mike, but don't you think that , SINCE a DSB acts as a nutrient sponge ultimately, that I would have "squeezed" the sponge out when I tore up the bed and redid everything? This would mean expelling ALL that junk...

    Care to solve a mystery?

I was able to save 60 gallons and had to add roughly 25 gallons of freshly made saltwater to accomodate the addition of the refugium.
