Well after dumping the 180 I went with a 75g. I like the size of my 55g but wanted something deeper. Next ill want something longer, but this will be my first sump tank. So I have gotten to the point of I'm about to paint the back of the tank black. I have drilled the glass, installed the bulkheads, ripped out and replaced the old silicone in the corners of the tank, I had Kel-Tech cut me come acrylic and tonight I cut the teeth for the overflow. Here are a few pics of the progress... More to come =]

So why am I the only one that is not allowed to drill a glass tank inside the house???? LOL

Looks good so far. Are you going to be able to clean the fuss of the teeth without losing any of them?

Did you get what you were asking for the 180??

Keep the pics coming. Us DIYers love to see how others do things.
Nice toy you got to mlil your acrylic. But it sure leaves a rough cut. Is there a different cutter that would leave the edges smoother?

quick deburr blade would be good. Looks great!
+1 on the kool tool!
Let us know when its wet!!!!! coral, fish, and rock too! :welcome:
did u really drill it inside??? LOL No way that would b happining!

looks better then what you said !!! now some updated pics i know it's close to holding water. drilling tanks in the living room is so less stressful then out in the garage!!!warmer too!!! lol

Lol yeah guys i drilled it in the house. My wife and kids are not home so i have the house a mess right now. As for that fuz that is just the protective sheet on the acrylic. There are no burs at all. I started weldin the sides together and pulled it off and will upload a pic here in a bit to show its nice and clean. As for the 180 I got what we talked about and now that guy has it listed for even more lol.

Yea I know what it is like when the wife is out of town. What they cant see wont hurt them. But you will lose a full day of DIY to cleaning the day before she is due home. LOL
Lookin good keep us posted

A little blurry and dirty but you can see here its all good. I got the sides welded on and about to work on the bottom. I hope I can get this siliconed to the tank tonight as well as getting the back painted black. I still need a sump tank and a new skimmer, then I can get this up and running.

Lol, you trying to get me shot lol? I didnt get anything on the floor actually. I got the overflow done and installed, guess ill have to wait for paint. I need someone to help me move the tank to the garage... better not spray paint in the house... Should I silicone the inside of the box to the glass as well?

Ok I got the tank painted and all ready for plumbing. I'm working on my sump design and have a few questions. I have an out of sump return pump I picked up on CL, but With this and due to the location of my returns will I need a check valve to keep water from flowing into my returns and flooding my sump if the pump is turned off or should my sump be able to hold that amount of water without flooding?

PICS!!! Still needs a cleaning but that will come after plumbing.

The 40g tank I got for the sump is a little to big I think. If anyone has a 30 gallon I will happily trade you.

I would silicone all the way around the overflow. Both in and out.
Your sump should be ran low enough that when you loose power the backwash should not overflow the sump. A check valve can and will fail.

depending on how high u put ur box will determine ur water line in ur dt and your baffles shouldnt be as tall as the sump...idk hths...do u have locline or something for the returns?

+1 a sump should be capable of holding all the water thats drained from the dt...

are u gonna screw that pump the the wall of ur stand and plump it to the bottom of the sump?

Ok so run the sump low and account for backwash I can do. I put the box up as high as I could and the slits are 1-1/2" long, also I do have loc-line that I'm guessing will turn into a siphon when this happens though. I guess in the end there is only one way to find out and hope for the best.

As of right now I'm planning on putting on the back wall and plumbing it. I bought another bulkhead and plan on drilling the sump tank. I don't have room for it anywhere else but now I guess I wont need much of a return chamber in the sump. I really need to find a 29 gallon tank local.

I picked up a Reef Octopus NWB-200 skimmer today for the tank. so now I can final measure out the Chambers for my sump.

Well after trying to figure out what size of tank I want for my sump and not finding something I would LIKE..... Custom seems the only way to go so I picked up some acrylic today and will be making a 16x16x30 for the sump. This way I can fit my skimmer in without taking up a crazy amount of the sump and also leave me the room I need at the end for my pump and other things to be at the base of my stand.

I ended up adding the silicone to the overflow and after playing with a few tanks I decided I would just buy the acrylic and build my own. I ended up going with 16x16x30 and will be using 12" baffles. I didn't want to pay and arm/leg for acrylic so I will have to wait until Monday to finish the sump but I did make it over to McLendons to pickup all the parts for my plumbing. I got it all put together and now need to take it apart to glue it all and add the tape to the threads. The down spouts into the sump will dump into filter socks.
