Well it has been a long time since I have been on reeffrontiers, but so far it hasn't been too friendly. This forum has taken on a competley new look from what it was a few years ago. I started to read some threads that were of interest to me that were posted on the first webpage that was loaded when I selected forums. I did a quick reply to a few threads and then was quickly messaged by comtrollers I assume saying I was trying to get my thread count up and were not all that friendly. What gives? Who cares about my thread count. Did I not see that some of the threads were old, no. I assumed they were recent since the first one was a happy new years thread.

Do I enjoy reading on this forum, yes. Do I have anything to bring to this forum, yes. Well see if this thread gets deleted just as quickly as my replies. Heck, maybe I will get banned for trying to re-engauge with RF?

The mods have had to deal alot recently with people abusing and trying to worm around the actual intent of the forums here. Spam bots and live spammers have been hitting the site pretty hard since you last were on. They will quickly realize you are not spamming and go back to their happy selves :) just trying to do their jobs

Do these spammers just post garbage or do they post with some sort of reef background to make themselves look somewhat credible? Why do these spammers waste their time? Is there some objective they have on this site?

To Kev's credit, a signup date of 2007 indicates hanging around a looooonnnnnggg time. I would think the post count push would have been then if at all.

Of course, this is coming from an old fart with a pitiful post count for as long as I have been here.... most in the last 3-4 years :)

Welcome to RF, and have patience with the mods- it's a thankless job, and those I know are truly good folk.
Rgds,
D

Kev we get all sorts that come to RF to spam. Let me give you a little run down on what we get here, perhaps it will shine a bit of a light.
>prior to the upgrade we were getting spambots, which would register and then post 10 miles of code in various threads, they were from CHina, India and similar. We bought some software and now it seems we have slowed that down, it is showing that we are getting some 75-150 spam bots trying to register every single day.
>then we get the human spammers, which are even harder to stop. Some just join up and put a link back to their site in their signature (for viagra, porn, and so on) and then dont post what so ever, just use it as a linkback.
> then we get others that join, leave it for months and then post random posts on random threads. The way you find them is that they are just posting on any threads, threads fro today, last week, 2 years ago, 5 years ago.
> Then we get folks that join up and just want to sell stuff on the board, but realize that they need a certain post count to do so, so they start posting real quick and with out thought in order to reach that goal. Our members have raised great concern that they do not want that or that type of seller on RF. We accomdaite.

Well Kev, when you started to re-engauge RF, you fell into two possible catagories. One that you were a spammer, as the threads you were posting in were some SIX years old and that you havent been active for almost a year.
The second was that you were post padding.

So if this was an error on our part and that you didnt realize the threads were from 2005 that you were posting on, then our bad. But when you are a mod and you get bombed by so many of the above of a daily basis you tend to just get through them, and end the member a pm.

Hope you understand.

Little more commercialized since the last time if i do say so!

I have to ask, is this directed towards RF?? If so I am interested to know what you mean by it.???

Well I can understand the concern to some degree, but after reading some of the privite messages it seems as if you are guilty until proven inocent here. From the few PSAS meetings I attended over the years, most folks on here seem nice and down to earth. With that said, the new site looks nice, still trying to get used to a few things that throw me off, like reading old posts that seem to show up easily for me...

I wouldnt say that at all Kev, I thinks its more of a matter of "After doing it for the 345 time" it become more of a machine type of thing where you are in a trance and are just trying to get through it so you can also enjoy the board. Perhaps you get jaded, but thats human nature.

Let me see if I can maybe help out here.

GoCougs, in reading through some of your old posts, it appears that you took about a year long break, in posting. Nothing at all wrong with this, but it may explain why you had such access to older threads, showing up for you. When you click What's New, it would have shown posts that have been made, SINCE you last posted, which was close to a year ago.

Then, you post 10 posts, in a matter of a few minutes. I'm not going to question your motivations, but will explain what may have went through the minds of staff members. Typically, when we see someone who goes on a 'posting spree,' especially if it's someone who doesn't have enough posts to access the Classifieds, AND/OR makes posts that are 2 or 3 words, such as "Cool frie," it's a pretty good indication that they're 'post padding,' in order to gain access to the Classifieds. In the not so distant past, 'Post Padding' became a huge problem, so much of a problem, that specific wording and rules had to be put in place, to help reduce the problem. Wording had to be put into our User Agreement, in the hopes of reducing the 'Post Padding.' When that wasn't as effective as was hoped, more drastic measures, including removing posts that appeared to be 'Post Padding,' had to be taken.

I'm not going to say that was your motivation, but I do hope this explanation will help you to see how it could have been seen that way.

Regardless of what has happened, welcome back to Reef Frontiers, after your time away!! We welcome your contribution!!!
