I was wondering if there is a website with pics of acans and their given name as far a color. Like the zoaid site. I love that site. I want them all:wink:
This is an Acanthastrea bowerbanki, isnt it? I was wondering if there was a color name for it. Just for curiosity sake!
The pic does not show the color quite right. the center is purple and mint green, the outside rings are a lime green and burgandy with orangeish highlights.

WOW Lorrie what a beautiful Acan colony and fortunately I don't believe there is a site like that. BECAUSE, if there were they would triple/quadruple in price just like all the named Zoas and Chalices.

I'd imagine too that it would be impossible, because of the different color variations. I have another one that is just beautiful. Both of these when I got them were just brown, but for some reason I knew they were going to be beautiful, so I took them.

They are very nice. The first one does look like a acanthastrea bowerbanki, and I beleive the second one is an acanthastrea echinata. No names that I know of. As with most corals, you will find specific names on particular sites, but usually it's just something they made up for more appeal.

Thanks guys
I have kinda gotten addicted to acans like I have zoas. Have a small assortment of them and they are growing and multiplying like crazy.

Acans are pretty; i may try them again once i change my 10K bulb to a 15K bulb..

I LOVE acans! I have been collecting for a while and I'm up to 13 varieties, mostly Acanthastrea Lordhowensis.

13? Wow, didnt know there were that many different varieties.
I'm looking for some rainbow or multi colored ones.

Here are pics of more of my collection.

I have one rainbow that I started from a single polyp (it's the one one the far left of the photo). It's really bright orangish red with white tentacles and accents of yellow and green. You have some pretty nice ones there, I will have to work on getting individual pictures of each.

Honey, I don't have any of them to share, cant keep them with my current lighting..too bright...

Really?
So looking thru your flickr pics, guess what I saw! I believe you called it "Lavender Acan"
HAHA, just mess'n with ya.
I didnt realize you built your tank yourself. That looks like a perfect size.

nah..that only lasted 5 months in my tank, damn gobies sifting sand on it, killed it..

Jason @ CFI built my tank, sump, and steel stand..solid piece of equipment and highly recommend his work.

I had an open brain coral and my goby was always trying to bury it. It was really cool watching the brain coral puff up and dump the sand off of itself.

Thats not true.. I had near 10 colonies of acans under 400W MHs. My rainbow acans lost most of their color but multiplied and thrived. I found that under 1700 watts of light in a 210 AGA with 500'Gs of water, all corals did well as long as I kept up with WC's.

Mine are doing really well under 250w metal halides and t5 actinics. Actually doing better than they were under t5s alone. Growing like crazy.

hmm...with the help of TJL, we reaquascaped my tank..i might give acans (and brains and wellsi) another try..i am also going to change lighting from 10k bulbs to 15K.
