Is it ok to add new live sand to an established reef tank? I have some in there now but would like to add a bit?

Yes it is alright, however you run the risk of adding bad things along with the good things. ie... cyno bacteria(red slime), bryopsis spores, red bugs, flat worms and so on.

Better to add dry sand to your established tank than run the risk of hitchikers.

If it comes from a known good source it should be OK but add it at 1/4" intervals of a few days apart so as to not smother the aerobic surface layer.

Careful on which dry sand you add. Some of them will give you much worse problems than hitchhikers.

Good luck
