Which Tang would be suitable for a 65G? I've been told that Yellows are aggressive, Koles are good but hid in rock often.....what about a Sailfin? I love how the Sailfin's look but am worried my tank would be too small. There are so many mixed reviews on min. tank sizes for Tangs. Is a Kole my best choice? Current inhabitants are pair of false-percs, Yasha Hase Goby, Bi-Color Blenny. I may add a Coral Beauty Angel later as well. Thanks for the help!

Well toss the sailfin out you should have like a 120 for that. But I think a kole tang would be OK in that size tank, as I've seen it done before.

Pretty much what I figured on for the Sailfin. Looks like it's a Kole for me, since everyone and their mother has a yellow :)

Hey my mom doesn't have yellow :p I do though :D They were rare for a while earlier this year...

FWIW - my Kole Tang does not hide in the rocks very often. The only time I don't see him is when he has gone to bed. Let us know how the addition goes.

That's good to hear Nikki. I'll let my new tank settle out for a month or so before adding anything new into the mix....unless I find one that I really like in the meantime :) Any problem mixing a Kole with a Coral Beauty or Flame Angel?

I would stick with one of teh smaller Ctenochaetus tangs for a 65 gallon. Many people will say that keeping a tang in a tank smaller than 4 feet is cruel, but I feel as long as you've got a minimum of 6 times the fishes body max body length, you'll be okay. I have a Tomini Tang in my 58 gallon.

I really want a Sailfin, but would rather have a happy Kole than a pissed Sailfin. Can you post any pics of your Tomini? I haven't come across one of those yet.

Nick's Tomini is really nice.

Here is a shot of it, however, the pic doesn't do it justice.

I had a sailfin, he grew FAST in my 100g tank.

Even a Kole gets big, when peaceful fish like these get bigger they eat first, this causes problems with any other fish, otherwise they are beautiful fishes.

I have a blonde naso in my 75 he is very fat and very happy. He trys to be in every photo I take. Its a event to take a picture without him front and center. I will be upgrading tanks soon. I think I want a 240 but may settle for a 150.

You can keep these when they are younger but when the day comes that fish will circle your tank like a buzzard you will know what I mean, they get over 18"

Most if not all fish I see in home aquariums are stunted in growth and I don't see them ever reaching there full size.

I hear you Scooty. Its happy now, but I agree he will get bigger. I know that most dont reach full wild potential, but he was big when I got him and bigger now. Plus fat. LOL It like jets from one side of the tank swims around a rock and then gets back to do the same thing then he will settle down and swim like everyone else. Just acts like a puppy sometimes playing. I will be getting a much bigger tank. I am addicted to reef tanks. Thats my buddy. Now if the Tang Police show up I am going to Taze them and take them up the road to Tompkinsville. I live in Kentucky and that place make Deliverence look like a Amish community. Its not a place you wanna be if you dont live there, and usually even then.

Blazer88,
Here are a couple of other shots of Tomini Tangs. These are not mine, but mine looks like these.

Here is the best photo I've been able to take of my Tomini.

Some reading for you.....(BTW, I've never seen or heard from other people who keep this fish, anywhere near the aggression that the first article mentions. These guys are just like Kole tangs in temperment, IME, and from everyone else I've ever spoken to. Henry Schultz makes them seem like Damsel's in attitude...they're not.)

Is it a Comb or a Bristle (Surgeonfish)? The Genus Ctenochaetus by Henry C Schultz

The "Bristle-Tooth" Surgeonfishes, Genus Ctenochaetus by Robert Fenner

I'm very happy with mine.

Nick
