can I handle a new anemone by hand to put it in a place I would like it to stay in my tank?

You can place it where you might like it......But it will move to where it wants to be.

As Scott indicated, they will wander to where they like, and hopefully, stay put. Mine unfortunately took a jump into the closed loop, but survived :) . With handling by hand, I would suggest wearing gloves if you are prone to allergies. Some people are sensitive to them, while others have no issues. What type of anemone are you thinking of adding?

go really slow when moving them "Most anemones that die quickly in the hobbyists care were doomed through mis-collection or rough handling in-between their purchase. I am referring to physically tearing the body, usually the disc/foot through hasty separation from the wild substrate or aquarium. Where removing anemones goes, careful patience is key ...the ultimate damage born is due to too anxious handling. Carefully, slowly slide a nail under the disc, around the perimeter to remove a specimen. Examine and bag same under water! Avoid having anemones or their "slime" touching your wrists, eyes, other non-calloused areas, especially mucus membranes Rinse and wipe off your hands. Most folks can tolerate time to time contact with most offered species; should you develop a sensitivity, wear thin rubber gloves, or keep your hands off! "
I put mine in a rock that had a hole and placed it such that it would be mostly up and down not flat and placed no rock touching underneath or on the side (the cliff hanger effect ?) luckily he has never moved the clown feeds him and he has got his natural color now here is a link to info that helped me raise mine from stressed out white to it's natural color I've had him for 7 months now under vho lighting :)
