I saw some on a rock before and just curious. I swear it looks exactly like encrusting monti. and its jet black. 
Anyone ever seen a BLACK encrusting sps?

That might be some type of sponge, but thats just a guess.
I have seen something like that on some cultured frags before but did not see any polyps.
I scrapped them off as it was growing too close to the frag but I don't recall it having a hard base.

I have some black encrusting sponge that is hard as can be and I suppose could look like a monti somewhat.
if i think about it I will take a pic tomorrow when the lights come on...... its not a invasive sponge and actually is a super slow grower
