I had two bar dartfish, also known as a bar goby or a zebra bar goby. I was doing some work on the tank yesterday and today I found, today that there was only one in the tank, I found the other one on the floor, deceased. My question is, will my other one get along fine by him/herself. I read that these fish either like to be in pairs or an odd number of multiples. If I add an additional one or two, will they likely get along with my single fish.I also heard that they won't get along with my royal gramma, but niether have shown aggression toward each other. My royal gramma is a timid fish. Any thoughts?

My opinion is this falls under the idea that fish have personality and ya just never know. but in general, dartfish like to hide out and enjoy their security...weather or not additions of more like fish will add to his security or take away? Who knows?

prob one of the least enjoyable aspects of this hobby for me is with each additon of fish you change the whole dynamics of the tank and sometimes never know who is stressin out about it.....and then wonder when they die.

Up until yesterday there were two and today only one, so this one has always had a partner. I am trying to decide whether to let him be, he seems to be eating okay and I didn't know if it was a good idea to put another in there to replace the one that died, or just leave everything as is.

I had 3 purple darts in qt. 2 paired off making one an outcast so I gave him to friend and this fish soon later died. of my 2, one found the only half inch hole in the lid and made a run for it. found on floor dead. didn't take a month before last one found dead in tank. keep in mind this was in qt so who knows, but they are supposed to be hardy fish and all seemed happy for many weeks.

You can leave him by himself. I had the same thing happen. The one lived alone just fine. Just keep a lid on the tank becaus it will jump too. My second one eventually jumped out of the tank about a year after the first one jumped. I left the top open after I fed and didnt notice he had jumped out.

I think I will see how he does by himself, he is eating and seems to be just fine. I don't think I will chance it.

I am thinking again and again how it is possible that some one is disappear? I have never heard it.

Yeah, it can happen. If a fish dies in the tank and you have a good clean up crew, you will never find it. However thats not what happened here. He said he found it on the floor.

Yep, I lost a Red Scooter Dragonet once while I was at my brothers in Oregon. When I came home, he was no where to be found. I moved shortly after that and never found him on the floor either. I think, as you said Lorrie, that the clean up crew made a meal out of him.

I had a bi-color dottyback vanish on me after a heater malfunction, I assume my CBS had a snack with his corpse.

I had a pajama cardinal that was pretty old. He was over 3" long. Pretty fat too. I knew he was going to be gone soon because he was having trouble chasing down food. He could see it, just couldnt judge where exactly it was and would always miss it. I was target feeding him for a long time. He finally disappeared over night one night. I saw a slight increase in nitrates. Did water changes for a few days but never did see him again.

I wrote Wet Web Media and Bob Fenner answered. I told him what had happened and he said that it wasn't uncommon. I wanted to know if he thought that single one would survive okay by itself. He said "not like likely, well "no". He said that they are a schooling fish and like being with others. I asked him if I added more if the single one would attack the new ones, he said not likely. I went to Barrier and got three small ones and put them in the bag in the tank to acclimate. The single one came out and displayed his threat posture, and I was concerned. When I finally released them after acclimation, the one bigger one was posturing and doing his threat display, as were the little ones. It was funny. I watched them and after a minute or so they calmed down and started swimming around together. All the other fish checked them out, then went about their business. Everyone is happy, I guess and they are little pigs at feeding time.

I have always kept dart fish in small groups of 3-7 with great success. Bar darts are very cool when they are schooling.

Took some pics and put them in my photo bucket album. eth12's Library | Photobucket 4 zebra bars.jpg
